Does the xf86-video-intel driver work with Intel HD Graphics (the integrated graphics core used in the Core iX processors)? I keep trying and trying but my /var/log/Xorg.0.log keeps coming up with "(EE) No devices detected."
The machine in question is a ThinkPad T410. It also has an nVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100m...but I just wanted to see the Intel graphics at work.
(Just out of curiosity. I had a laptop that ran a GMA 945 Express before and I wanted to see if Intel's graphics actually got any better.)
(If xf86-video-intel does indeed support the new core, then my second guess would be that because of the Quadro NVS I'm never going to see the new Intel core at work...)

If you have the nvidia card working, but not intel, consider yourself lucky. Most people can only get intel working, but what they want is nvidia!
Can you choose the graphic card in the BIOS? Unless you have an Optimus machine, and I don't think you do, there's a high chance there's an option in the BIOS.
About the performance of HD graphics... Quite a bit better than any previous intel graphics chip, definitely *a lot* better than the 945. But still below even the most low-end discrete Nvidia and ATi cards.

Are you sure that this machine has hybrid graphics? The entry in ThinkWiki suggests that it has either Intel or nVidia graphics
