How can I disable akonadi/nepomuk?

I have a really old PC, what my parents use for surfing, mail, etc.
It has a P4 2.8GHz CPU and 768MB memory, and Arch with the latest KDE.

It's a little bit slow, and not really responsive, so I tried to make it a little faster and more responsive. The first thing i did, is to disable the strigi desktop indexing, and nepomuk service from system settings, because we never ever used it. However, if i look in top/htop, it still shows me, that akonadi is running, along with mysqld, and using a huge amount of memory...

memory use

How can I free those resources?

It wasn't yesterday when I saw KDE last time, but I think there's a menu in System Preferences, where you can tick/untick this option. But do not ask me to provide its name.

System Settings -> Workspace Appearance -> Desktop Search. You can also just type "nepomuk" into KRunner to open up that settings module. Don't know why the KDE folks chose to stick it there, but there it is.

P.S.: It's prefered that posters use thumbnails rather than full-sized screenshots, to save bandwidth. Just a note for the future.

If you use kmail, then akonadi (along with mysqld) is - or will be - a necessity. At least earlier you could disable it by changing resources somewhere in the system settings. Note that it's probably using 20-30 MB, which isn't some huge amount, and parts of it can be swapped out. Actually, kmail+akonadi+mysql might be using less memory than a tab with gmail in chromium, if you're running kde.

Sorry, should have read more closely. Quick-and-easy answer would be to just uninstall akonadi, which would take with it anything from the kdepim/ group. To be frank, though, with system specs like those, most people would just forego using KDE. It doesn't have a reputation for being the most resource-conservative DE; maybe XFCE or LXDE would be preferable?

If you do not use akonadi, add startup program with this command:

akonadictl stop

Try first in konsole!

I thought Akonadi was just a library / database for some KDE applications. It doesn't really "run", instead it just gets used when you run an application that uses it.

Ooops, I didn't read the table header either, the first column is the virtal size the other the actual one. I thought it's around 1.5 GB which seemed horrible. So you are right. I should pay attention to every word in a post

I have a question: how to reactive the nepomuk miniature in the panel? Because I had it on KDE 4.4 but no more in 4.6...
And why sometimes akonadi send me an error message because strigi isn't reunning escept I active it on systemsettings. (I've 2go of ram^^ and active instant nepomuk).

I only understand parts of it, but it clear, that for an average user, the Virtual Memory is just a really confusing and unneccessary data...

Yes, that's right. But it depends on how the packages are split. For instance, in opensuse, there is libakonadi. Arch just have a diferent packaging approach.
