Check for source updates

Hi,
I mantain a couple of PKGBUILDs and I was wandering if there is a (simple) way to automatically check for upstream updates.

P.S.: Happy new year. ^^

Subscribe to the mailing lists for each project.

Re: Check for source updates

Unfortunately there is no universal way to do this, it would be really nice if there was.  Mailing lists are good as tomk mentions, but RSS feeds can be better if the projects have them.  The kernel for instance has a really nice RSS feed that will notify you of updates.

Re: Check for source updates

Thank you. I actually thought about RSS feeds, but I was looking for a more general approach. Will fall back to them when available, then.

While poking around I found this firefox extension which could be useful, but I haven't looked into it yet.

Re: Check for source updates

I use RSS or an announcement mailing list provided by the upstream project. If there is neither I use my simple w3watch script to get notified on changes on certain web/ftp sites: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36918

freshmeat will notify by email of new releases, if you set it up. Of course, it requires that someone update freshmeat.

Re: Check for source updates

A more general firefox plugin that I used to use is 'update scanner'.

Subscribing to the mailing list is better though, since not all projects regularly update a website (or have a separate website for such announcements).

i am using diffbot.com to track changes. for every page you subscribe, you can choose between mail or rss. it's quite handy.

If the project is hosted on jithub.com you can follow the evolution of the software easily.

Re: Check for source updates

I've been using websec for years - it emails you the page if it changed, and *highlights* the changes.

Here are the 2 programs - websec and webdiff, tweaked to remove the useless progress messages, so websec can be conveniently run by cron.
