Re: Packages Wish-Slip

How about some more fun stuff?  I was thinking xearth (yes, I know about xplanet), xsnow and xfishtank.

On a more serious note, any chance of getting the Java Development Kit ported to AL?

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

i will take a look at all of your suggestions when i get a chance.

jdk could be a bit of a task though! Some have had success installing and using the current j2re 1.4.1. I think there is a package in the incoming tree that has a jdk in it as well.

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

I got JDK 1.4.1 downloaded and installed but I'm getting some UnsatisfiedLinkErrors when I try and run anything with a gui.  I'm looking at the Java web site to see if there's any help there, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

if you want java to work absolutely the best in a gcc 3.2 environment then the best option is to rebuild it using gcc3.2. there is a procedure on how to do this on the LFS hints site.

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

Alas!  A fast system is not what you could call what I have.  That's a few more steps than I really wanted to go through for the jdk.
How about my other suggestions?

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

as for your other package suggestions i will take a look at them once i have finished updating the unofficial tree this week (which i should have done by tuesday or wednesday).

Actually i will be going through this thread again and taking a crack at packaging most of the packages suggested that have not been done.

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

how about. RPM support.  pacman is far better then RPM, but it would make life alot easier when installing nvidia modules to to a rpm --rebuild and rpm -ivh (or however u fancy) then the going on with the cpio, and blah blah blah.  its always been my train of thought that u shouldn't burn a bridge

How about a package for NTP?  I got a pretty good one from www.ntp.org and it compiled and installed fine.

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

gnome 1.4 is a PITA to build, so i doubt it's gonna happen, especially since we're almost at gnome 2.2...at least I won't do it wink

Why would you want gnome 1.4 btw?

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

Actually there are many good reasons for gnome 1.4. At least the libs. I can name at least 3 things I can't get going in arch because I can't get gtk-perl to run (based on gnome-libs 1.4). I do dvdripping and drip and dvd::rip are both high on the list, but I'm shut out of them because gnome-libs 1.4 won't build because of a bad docbook implementation (if there even is one). A lot of apps depend on gtk-perl so packages for that would be great.

Also, we could use some precompiled nvidia binaries for the stock kernel, or at least an abs script, not to mention audigy drivers. Since the kernel compiling and linking proceedure is different with abs, the audigy drivers were a joy to compile (joy = 2 hours of fiddling).

Re: Packages Wish-Slip

why not use transcode for dvd ripping it is only just a little more typing than in say dvd::rip which is just a frontend afterall. to me as a maintaine does not see the practicality of making virtually all of gnome 1.4 to make one program that make two more. well okay you would have galeon too but still building and compiling and mian taining most of gnome 1.4's core for four packages seems a tad excessive.
