[SOLVED] GDM Theme not working (I read the wiki and previoust posts)

I downloaded a GDM theme put it in /var/lib/gdm then after reading the wiki I ran the following commands to get the gdm configuration window: first su to switch to root user
then
# xhost +SI:localuser:gdm
and
# sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties
the window popped up and I pressed install, after that I went into /var/lib/gdm and selected the theme (a tar.gz file). After this I got the error: "ArchDarch" does not appear to be a valid theme. I tried this for two gdm themes and got the same error here are the links for the themes that I tried:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ … tent=87270
and
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ … tent=80102

any suggestions on what I may have done wrong or how I can get around this error

Iv'e battled with GDM in the past too. Unfortunately I don't know the direct answer to your question, but I recommend switching to SLIM (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Slim).  The install is dead easy, works perfectly with gnome, has many simple arch themes just like the GDM ones you were looking at, and is customizable, you can even make your own themes (http://slim.berlios.de/themes_howto.php).

GDM doesn't use those themes anymore. It only uses GTK themes.
