ASUS UL30 Elantech touchpad jitter/jumping

I've been running Arch x86_64 for over a year on this laptop, and recently had to send it back for (dropped it). I think they simply replaced the laptop instead of just replacing the shell, so it may actually have a different touchpad or a hardware revision.

Anyhow, the touchpad works, even with two-fingered scrolling and three-finger right click, however I experience cursor 'jitter' and 'jumpiness', even with a single finger completely still.

I tried enabling [testing] and updating everything....that didn't fix it. Does anyone have suggestions for /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf settings? In the past on my other laptops I've never had to configure anything, just simply install xf86-input-synaptics.

It looks like there was a kernel fix in the aur at one point in time, but it's quite old:

Also, it's an Elantech touchpad. Here is the output of dmesg:

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This has rendered my touchpad very inaccurate.

I have an Asus UL30a, first generation, and I have had that problem. It appeared after a kernel update this august, so it was some time ago. I don't remember how I fixed it though, but I think I just did a reboot or something... Anyway, I don't use any 10-synaptics.conf file, and it works beautiful since then, so I don't think you would need one either. Sorry if I'm not too much help, just saying, it _should_ work

That's strange, I didn't ship it out for RMA until mid December, and before then it was working fine. Are you running any [testing] packages? I have never had to do any configuration beyond installing the synaptics package, but a config file is present (I guess generated by xorg-server) here:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf

So if you press one finger down on the touchpad the cursor is completely still? Do you mine posting your output of

sudo pacman -Q

Also does your touchpad show up as a touchpad in your desktop environment (for instance, under KDE's System Settings>Input Devices)? Mine shows up simply as a mouse. I've read that this is a known bug for ASUS laptops, specifically Elantech touchpads.

I am running [testing], yes. It's working great when your computer is all-intel

I have also never done any config, and I have the same file present.

When I press a finger down it's completely still. It moves like it should, and tap-to-click, two-finger-scroll and two-finger-middle-click is enabled by default and working.

I use gnome, and under mouse settings I have a 'touchpad' tab, but none of the settings seems to work.

Now I may be imagining, but I think that the bug where Elantech touchpad = Logitech mouse is solved. You should try and enable testing repository. I don't know what kernel you are using, but in 2.6.37 it's all good.

Yes I have enabled [testing] and have the latest kernel, however the problem still persists. I'm going to see if any packages you have installed vs mine raise any red flags. Last night I tried the latest Kubuntu on a flash drive and the problem existed there as well :\

EDIT:

This time instead of updating everything I only updated xorg-server and xorg-server-common and it seems to have helped, though it isn't perfect. Last night the latest intel driver caused some poor compositing performance when previewing running programs using smooth tasks (KDE plasmoid)

Hopefully this will fix it, because it's a pain in the ass to do anything that requires precision.

Maybe this revision just has a cheaper touchpad....we'll see with the next few kernel/xorg updates. Fingers crossed.

Keeping fingers crossed for you. I find it weird that you have that problem and I don't, when we have (I think) identical hardware AND software....

I just found this, and I have the exact same problem on my Eee PC 1015PE. When I put my finger down on the touchpad, it moves, but after it works as it should. Tap to click doesn't work either, or at least doesn't seem to. I have kernel26 and the latest xorg updates which were just merged into stable from testing installed, but still the problem persists. Was this ever solved, or any ideas?

I still have problems with jittering, but I have always been able to tap to click.

I have had this problem on and off. Try unplugging your laptop and using it on batter. Does it still jitter? I just noticed it doesn't do this on battery.

No, the problem was resolved quite some time ago with either a driver or kernel update.
