password placeholders

I make unseen typos when I put in my passwords from the console.  Being that I'm at home and not worried about someone looking over my shoulder, is there a way of using * characters as password placeholders??

Try setting GETPASS_ASTERISKS to 1 in /etc/login.defs.

I just did that and it didn't work (the changes were saved).  Maybe there's another setting too?
