gnome-screensaver comes on while mplayer is playing

Ever since a recent update, mplayer no longer seems to disable gnome-screensaver.  (Gnomescreensaver starts when mplayer is playing).  I have successfully used the following heart beat command to do it for months.

$ cat ~/.mplayer/config
heartbeat-cmd="/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-command -p > /dev/null" # for gnome-screensaver
nosub=1
subfont-autoscale=1
font=subfont.ttf
osdlevel=3

I looked at my pacman.log to see what got upgraded, but I'm not sure which of these would affect either mplayer or gnome-screensaver (list below).

Anyone else experiencing this?

Re: gnome-screensaver comes on while mplayer is playing

Can you try a different heartbeat command so you can see if this is a problem with mplayer or gnome-screensaver? If it's mplayer I don't know what to do other than file a bug report or get support from the mplayer devs. If it's gnome-screensaver I can think of some possible workarounds.

Re: gnome-screensaver comes on while mplayer is playing

@fflarex - what command would you recommend?  I can verify that mplayer is sending the "poke" because I intentionally placed a typeo in the ~/.mplayer/config and I received an error once every 30 sec.

AO: [oss] 48000Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Starting playback...
Movie-Aspect is 1.73:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [vdpau] 1280x720 => 1280x720 Planar YV12
sh: gnome-screensaver-commanD: command not found
sh: gnome-screensaver-commanD: command not found
sh: gnome-screensaver-commanD: command not found  3%  2%  0.3% 0 0
A:  33.4 V:  33.4 A-V:  0.000 ct: -0.040 835/835  3%  2%  0.3% 0 0

I am forced to conclude that the problem is with the gnome-screensaver-command program or something interfering with the communication between mplayer and gnome-screensaver.

You could try 'xset s reset'. If that doesn't work you could use xdotool to simulate a keypress every so often.

Re: gnome-screensaver comes on while mplayer is playing

I could use caffeine also, but this functionality in both mplayer and gnome-screensaver has been present for years... I'd like to get to the bottom of why it suddenly stopped working.

EDIT: Logged a bug report.  Since neither package has been updated in a quite a while, and it had been working just fine, I don't think the problem is in upstream.

Having this problem aswell. I just turn screensaver off and on using gnome-screensaver-command before starting the player.

EDIT: attempted script didn't work, sorry.

Re: gnome-screensaver comes on while mplayer is playing

is enough to pass -stop-xscreensaver to mplayer

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I can verify this problem as well... I've bypassed it by using caffeine but it is annoying when I'm watching something on tv from the computer and I've forgotten to turn on caffeine and I have to get up to turn it on... 11.10
