KDE with qt and opengl

Hey!
I'm interested, if someone of you already tried to launch kde with qt set to use the opengl backend? At the moment I use the raster backend but I started dolphin with --graphicssystem opengl and it seems to work fine for me (Nvidia 435m with closed driver). So did some of you use opengl and what are your experiences?

Best regards!

Re: KDE with qt and opengl

On catalyst drivers KDE crashes on startup, as far as i remember it was a problem with plasma.

Re: KDE with qt and opengl

Hi,

I have tried it a few times, but it is not completely usable for me yet. At the moment, I get some minor graphics glitches in amarok with a HD5650 graphics card and the catalyst driver.
I do not feel a big speed increase, so i just continue using the default backend.

with intel drivers qt apps are completely unusable or whole plasma crashes. Tested with KDE 4.6rc2.

Re: KDE with qt and opengl

Ok, this is interesting... On my laptop, all aplications seems to work fine. The only problem is plasma. The transparent areas (like the panel and the other widgets) get black shadows and looks a little bit weird. But the rest seems to work fine and is performant. So I hope they fix this problem and maybe in a year we can use the opengl backend... Would be great!

Re: KDE with qt and opengl

I'm not sure where to change it but

dolphin --graphicssystem opengl

works as normal (not withstanding dolphin's issues with optical media)

I'm using the closed nvidia drivers with 4.6RC2 from [kde-unstable]

Re: KDE with qt and opengl

Yes this works for me too. But when you close plasma-desktop in systemmanager (Ctrl + esc) and then enter plasma-desktop --graphicssystem opengl in Krunner (Alt + F2), you restart plasma with opengl backend, and there I get these graphic glitches. The rest also seems to work for me with closed nvidia drivers and stable KDE 4.5.

Re: KDE with qt and opengl

When I do that I get the task manager plasmoid is all dodgy, it also looks like I have oxygen instead of air

on the bright side the CPU use is minimal

Re: KDE with qt and opengl

I also did a little bit of more research and for the moment it seems that raster is a little bit faster on my laptop (starting of applications is a bit faster). But I also noticed, that the CPU use with opengl backend is minimal.
