Can't log into normal user account

My old laptop recently broke and I decided to just get a new one (Lenovo Thinkpad Edge) and installed arch x86_64 on it, everything seemed to work, but after I installed Xfce4 and Slim it wouldn't let me log into my normal user account, only my root account. When I looked in my user account's folder in the /home it was empty, not even a desktop. Any assistance welcome.

Re: Can't log into normal user account

Something must have gone wrong creating the user. I would delete the user and set an account up again. The beginners guide tells how to do both

Re: Can't log into normal user account

Do you have /home on a separate partition? Was it properly mounted on boot?
Can you log in as a user via the console? Check what users do you have on your system.

Re: Can't log into normal user account

Thank you for the replies, I tried making the account again and that didn't work. And yes my home directory is in a separate partition. I also tried cd into the user folder and it says it doesn't exist but ls -a shows it.

Doublecheck if your /home is properly mounted.
