GNOME problems.

GNOME is crazy. When I go

xinit gnome-session

First a terminal appears it's called login. The problem is that it spouts error messages I dont understand. Furthermore it doesn't return a prompt so I can type exit and exit the anchor terminal back down to tty1. Also if I go ^C it asks me if i want to end these 2 wierd processes and then drops down to tty1. I can go System > Logout no problem. Anyway back tto the aforementioned error messages. Due to the nature of copy pasting and the fact I have to do this in chunks this is somewhat mangled. Just please skim over this.

and so on.
I have no idea what's happening? I have consolekit installed and dbus in in the daemons line of /etc/rc.conf.
In addition sometimes the desktop moand about something being wrong with the panel widgets configuration asks if I want to delete them or not. Sometimes this doesn't happen.
Also I get the following message of love in a popup every time I try to open gnome-terminal:
Could not acquire name on session bus
If I close the popup chaos ensues. Mad windows seem to be trying to open all at once according to the panel. I'm stuck going to main terminal window ^C that ends it.

If I close main gnome terminal window it just closes nothing happens.

Clue me in here people. What is happening? The wiki doesn't seem to have what I need and if it does it's in a form I don't understand. Also if any of you guys experienced similar problems let me know that I'm not alone at least.

Re: GNOME problems.

@defears

Firstly thank you for answering the question. I thought I was screwed. Again man you're a lifesaver. I really appreciate it.

I will try your advice as soon as I can get to my laptop.

Can you explain to me better the difference between "startx", "xinit gnome-session", and "exec ck-launch-session gnome-session"?

From what I understand startx is a front end for xinit and with a properly written .xinitrc can be made to invoke any desktop with startx. What exactly does the "exec ck-launch-session gnome-session" do? Or rather if you're right about this I know that it should give me a working desktop. Like how does it differ from xinit gnome-session? By the way does the ck stand for consolekit?

Sorry I'm asking so many questions but I'm just trying to understand what is happening. The wiki while certainly interesting isn't always of the best quality. I'm one of those people that needs the lowdown what exactly is what no ambiguities.

Re: GNOME problems.

Don't you think you should first google 'ck-launch-session' or 'console-kit' before asking about it?

Re: GNOME problems.

Ngoonee I agree 100%.

Sometimes though the search results aren't understandable to people like me and that's why I ask.

When you see these things keep in mind that googling and getting a good explanation is quicker than going through the hassle of logging in writing my question out monitoring for results etc. When I ask I ask for good reason. It's not like I'm a baby seeking to be spoonfed.

If you can explain what I need to know great. If you can link me to something that explains it in the way I think about things even better.

It certainly does not seem like 'a good reason' to me when you did not even know for certain whether ck-launch-session is connected with consolekit. This indicates at the very least that you did not even attempt to search first.

Please refer to point 2 in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … ow_to_Post - using Arch you're expected to do your own research FIRST and then ask about things you don't understand. Since you seem to believe that that is easier than posting and waiting for reply, please go and do so.

@Cerales.
Which of the two criteria do you not understand.

@defears.
Thanks for the advice. The thing is when I go

exec ck-launch-session gnome-session

the terminal briefly whines about not being able to open the display and logs me out. Even sudoing the same command doesn't change that.

Furthermore

ck-launch-session gnome-session

nor

gnome-session

do the job.

The funny thing is when I add to ~/.xinitrc the line you mentioned it launches. There's no annoying login terminal spouting error messages. Sadly they still exist in the output of tty1. Also some panel widgets like the network widget still aren't working but that I'll go about fixing separately.

I'm just wondering what is wrong. Can someone please help.

Re: GNOME problems.

For an easier stuff just install gdm and add it on your daemon arrays.
