nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

Finally went out and bought an nvidia geforce 6600Gt video card.

But guess what now I can't install the dam thing.

I followed the arch wiki but all I get is

Installation starts now ...
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
If you need more information about setting up nvidia drivers have a look at:
"http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/How to install NVIDIA Driver"

modprobe nvida gives the same results. I thoght pacman -S nvida is supposed to install the kernel modules so how com e it can't find them ?

I even created a /usr/src/linux symlink to the current kernel - still not working. So what's going on I thought nvidia drivers were supposed to be really easy to install ????

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

did you try it inside X?
nvidia will not install if X is running... it should give a message to the effect

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

I did initially and it did run without complaining that X was running.

I then downloaded the driver direct from nvidia that did complain about X running, but even with X shutdown it failed to install.

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

the one downloaded from nvidia failed to install?

do you have a custom kernel? do you have the kernel source installed in the proper place?
you may need to look through the nvidia install documentation - because something's missing and I'm not sure what....

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

nvidia  installed ok for me. in fact, easier in Arch than in Fedora 3 which couldnt handle it at all.

Could you say what the error msg was when you say "failed to install" ?

if i recall, briefly, my nvidia Arch setup was via root terminal, no X window running, and running pacman -Sy nvidia.
then it was modifying xorg.conf  and adding nvidia to the modules section in /etc/rc.conf

careful how you spell nvidia.

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

The error message when I run pacman -S nvidia is shown in my first post.

I do not have a custom kernel I have pacman -S kernel26 (kernel-2.6.11.3-ARCH)

Do I need to install kernel full kernel sources with ABS for nvidia to work ?

I did try this but he kernel failed to build (can't remember why now)

Here's the last part of nvidia-installer.log incase that helps

usb-storage: device scan complete
Disabled Privacy Extensions on device c05d68a0(lo)
   lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
nvidia: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

nvidia: version magic '2.6.11.3-ARCH SMP preempt K7 gcc-3.4' should be
'2.6.11.3-ARCH SMP preempt 686 gcc-3.4'

Isn't it about k7 vs 686? Flags? Different drivers? I don't know.

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

my arch install was from just a stock 2.6 kernel base +ftp install, no kernel tinkerings until after when i ran a full system update.

Installation starts now ...
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.

sorry i misread this bit,  thought you were trying to run the thing there, and the system couldnt find the module, not the installer.

my system uname -a  for what its worth :

Linux localhost 2.6.11.3-ARCH #1 SMP Mon Mar 14 17:01:28 PST 2005 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Could the pacman repository download have been corrupt ?

Try uninstalling / ripping the whole Nvidia directories out and re-installing via the .run package direct from Nvidia site ?

Sounds like witchcraft to me. good luck sorting it.

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

Check to see if there are /dev/nvidia* entries. If not, then run NVmakedevices.sh

Re: nvida driver - can't find nvidia module

Ummmm has anyone solved this problem?

I've just started to get the same thing with the 711* drivers.

Any ideas?
