Tried to be concise with my subject. I was having this problem a few months ago but more or less turned a blind eye to it and forgot about it until now and have decided that once and for all I'm going to fix this. So here is what goes down: I'm able to mount different partions, external hard drives and the like easily enough (as root, can't mount them without sudo) however I'm unable to write to any of them, even when I'm logged in as root I continually get a "permission denied" when trying to make directories or copy over files. Upon trying to change my file permissions in Thunar so just the users group as the ability to read & write (it should be noted that under my Permissions tab, it clearly says Root has read & write access, though it seems I don't), I get a myriad of missing file errors or operation not supported. For instance, if I try changing the group to users I get: "Failed to change file group of "desktop.ini" "Operation not supported." Then it gives me an option to skip and it brings up another 5-6 dialouges telling me that things have failed to change because the operation isn't supported. I looked at the Thunar wiki page but that didn't yield me any results, so I figured I'd ask here. I know you guys love being famous for your 3 word answers so if you must just point me towards the correct wiki and I'd be grateful. Thanks for any and all help, shit I need it.

Lot's of Thunar problems lately
Check out this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=111867&p=1
You should be able to fix you permission problems with that. What DE/WM are you using ?
In short:
You'll need the gvfs package for trash support and dbus to deal with permissions.

Thanks for the reply. It seems that thread is about seeing removable devices, however I have no problem seeing them. I've already got the gvfs package installed and running dbus-launch thunar did me no good. I suppose it should be noted I'm having the same problem in Nautilus as well. I'm using Openbox as my WM if that helps clear anything up

@saint_13 - how are launching your DE or WM? Check that you have consolekit installed and if you use ~/.xinitrc, try using:
exec dbus-launch ck-launch-session whateverwm

Alright so I did that, which now allows me to mount removeable media while not as root (which hey, I won't complain lol.) However, I'm still not allowed to create directories (even as root) once it's mounted

What file system do you have on your external drive? If its NTFS, make sure you install ntfs-3g.
