[Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

My issue happens randomly, it is releated to boot process,

sometimes when i boot up my notebook uvesafb and nvidia drivers are not initalized so GDM or X cant be started at all, so i must reboot my notebook once more and pray that kernel readings will not stop on this line

If kernel reading stops on lines above he is unable to get uvesafb and nvidia drivers to work, which leads to errors inserting modules from X

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.36-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko): No such device

but when i change drivers to vesa in xorg i am able to start X but only in low graphic mode.

here is the list of my pci devices , as you can see, nvidia device is recognized succesfuly, but is refusing to comunicate with kernel. If i tray to manualy load nvidia drivers or forcing it to load i also recive this error above.

i relay do not catch this. maybe GPU is is allready used by process or memory is allready somehow alocated to any none process. Dont realy know..
one more thing if  I append nolapic and noapm i am able to pass this and i am able to enter X,. I traied with nolapic noapm parameter more than 10 times and always is successful. but with nolapic my dual core CPU becomes one core, i also traied with acpi=off noagp pci=nobios but no luck, always randomly crash

nvidia drivers are from repositores and thy are latest, also v86d is latest

nvidia 260.19.29-1
nvidia-utils 260.19.29-1

i was traying to disable uvesafb but always same thigs happens, i am using kernel

2.6.36-ARCH

but in earlier kernel 2.6.34-ARCH same error is provided..I will tray ubuntu kernel with theri pathces but version 2.6.32 and post results here, becuose every new kernel from 2.32  failing to start nvidia properly.

same things happens if i inastall eralier version of nvidia from repos

I made all logs of successful and failed scenarios, if they will help i will post them.

EDIT:
i also trayed lts kernel, ubuntu and ice with gentoo patches but same issue accours (system freeze for 5 sec then dormaly boot, but with no luck of inerting nvidia modules [no souch device]), i am wondering right now, this isn't releated to kernel it cant be, it must be something with module which taken resoureces of nvidia device before it ment to do, maybe i need to blaclist some modules, but dont know which one.

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

Haven't done this very much, so bear with me.

Did you add the v86d hook to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf? Did you recreate initcpio using 'mkinitcpio -p kernel26'
Does your monitor support the resolution listed in /etc/modprobe.d/uvesafb.conf?
Do you have an xorg.conf file? If so, it's best that you remove it and use xorg.conf.d
Does 20-nvidia.conf exist?

I do believe uvesafb is blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.conf, and needs to be commented out, but only one should be commented, I believe it's to avoid conflicts.

*Phew* Hopefully some of that will be useful

EDIT: If all else fails, try 'depmod -a' and reboot

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

thax for your help G_Master I allready tray your steps earlier but i did not inculde them into my post earlier. I have spent some years with linux so yoursteps are allredy trayed, but this is first time I use Arch.

Did you add the v86d hook to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf?

V86d is addaed to hook arrry and i Dont have any issue with them, I told that this things happend randomly, because if kernel don't frozze system for 5-10sec he is able to probe device and  he succesfully insert moduls,  so my GPU modules like nvidia and uvesafb work in succesfull scenario.

Did you recreate initcpio using 'mkinitcpio -p kernel26

yes i usualy uuse that, when compiling kernel, or addinig som stuff to hoook array, right now is not needed i think, but here it is

HOOKS="base udev v86d scsi sata filesystems keymap"

Does your monitor support the resolution listed in /etc/modprobe.d/uvesafb.conf?

monitor is set to native HD resolution, 1680x1050 here is mine vbe_modes, avalible resolutions, and uvesafb.conf

yes 20-nvidia.conf exist and i use xorg.conf i can tray them but my issue isnt releated to post boot scripts, X is started after all daemons are located and eecuted [fail/done], so this si sufficent to tray.
it must be something with eary boot process, I must admint that i dont know  where to search anymore, i trayed ubuntu lucid vidth nvidia drivers offical and v86d, as i can see computer with ubuntu kernel 2.6.32.25 start normaly all the time, without any hangs on preboot.

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

Hmm...quite the problem you seem to have there. lol

Remove the nvidia package and try the official nvidia installer, couldn't hurt.
Also, what's the brand and model number of your notebook?
Maybe you need to install the legacy version of nvidia for older cards?

EDIT: This looks kinda similar, if vesa and uvesa doesn't work.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=106945

EDIT AGAIN: I meant vesafb and uvesafb T_T

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

my notebook is FL90/91 comapl with Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT 512MB 128bit

this isnt releated to nvidia drivers what i now for now..Issue is also happening with nouveau drivers or with no drivers at all, my notebook works superbly under ubuntu Lucid with no any issue descibed above, so this isn't releated to falling hardware or anithing similar. why? Because with nouveau nvidia or non dirvers at all i had sam issue. this must be something with kernel or modules: i will tary to cp modules blacklisted from ubuntu instalation and put it in arch, maybe this will help you newer know.

topic that you mentioned doesnt consist of same problem as I have, Thx again

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

Sounds kinda silly, but after looking at it again it almost seems like HAL and DBUS aren't running. Did you start them in the right order? Are they listed under daemons in /etc/rc.conf?

Poke around through here and then try starting your desktop manager again: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL

His problem starts waaaaaaaaaaaaaay before either HAL or DBUS would enter the picture. And I don't have the slightest idea what either of those could have to do with the problem. The problem is somewhere in hardware initialization. So possibly in the kernel config.

@markoer: Compile a kernel with the same config as the Ubuntu kernel has. See if that works. Them compare the Ubuntu config with Arch's kernel26 config, maybe seeing the differences in the configs will give insight into how to solve the problem.

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

Hi
After last update I'm having similar problems with my laptop. Sometimes it's start normally, sometimes it doesn't work. I've tried Sabayon and Ubuntu. Worked fine until I've decided to upgrade them then  the same problem. I've got FL90 with 8600M GT 256MB.
I won't help you much, because I'm still learning how to use linux but I think it's kernel problem. I've installed  2.6.34-ARCH #1 kernel and 260.19.29 NVIDIA drivers ( from nvidia's site, those from repository generates some error) and laptop works normally.

no it is not same discusion, this guy compalins about Xorg, Nvidia issue which cant be started at all and it is releated to nvidia drivers. My issue is someway before inserting nvidia modules and it happens only when kernel reading froze for a couple of seconds in probing devices..

I didn't try yet "Gusar" suggestions, but i will when i get more times.Result will be posted soon I hope so smile

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

so,

this issue doesn't appear with config file from default ubuntu kernel which i used on kernel26-lts(compiled from source). Kernel succesfully pass this line desribed above and i am represented with GDM afterall with no errors of NVIDIA or XORG. I give you default kernel config file from ubuntu and default config from arch..They defer in some way..Now I wana know what solved this issue in ubuntu default config, which option

this is Ubuntu default .config file
http://pastebin.com/QRRJ0aTM

and here is default arch .config with precompiled kernel
http://pastebin.com/LWYi58V9

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

i must show you once more my issue and how i solved it.

It happens randomly on almost every boot with precompiled kernels
kernel-2.6.36.arch
kernel-2.6.36-lts (which have similar error like these kernels but not the same)
kernel-2.6.37-ck

I also trayed with manualy kernel compilation
kernel-2-6-36-lts
kernel-2.6.32 (with ubuntu patches and default ubuntu config)
kernel-2.6.37-ck (with BFS)

so,
with default arch kernels and ck kernel my system wasn't able to boot or pass these lines correctly

pci 0000:00:1f.0: quirk: [io  0x1000-0x107f] claimed by ICH6 ACPI/GPIO/TCO
pci 0000:00:1f.0: quirk: [io  0x1180-0x11bf] claimed by ICH6 GPIO
pci 0000:00:1f.0: ICH7 LPC Generic IO decode 1 PIO at 0680 (mask 007f)
pci 0000:00:1f.0: ICH7 LPC Generic IO decode 3 PIO at 0068 (mask 0007)
pci 0000:00:1f.0: ICH7 LPC Generic IO decode 4 PIO at 1640 (mask 007f)

this was problem.
kernel freezes for 5-10 sec and then boot continues but without v86d and nvidia modules inserted correctly, so i cant get nice tty and X can't start, then i was represented with error in inserting nvidia modules from X. (no souch device)
in other words:
If you take a look in my earlier posts you will see that nvidia was recognized, but in some other way which is not normal: Maybe memory reading was corupted or pci irq alocation faill (but i was thinking I will see those errors on screen before system would invoke kernel panic, so i exclude that). Wans't shure anymore, what is cousing this freeze, maybe accessing GPU bios, but firstly i trayed with other kernels jus to be certain that it was bios issue

so i create PKGBUILD for ubuntu kernel 2.6.32 with ubuntu patches, from lucid repositories, in this time I use ubuntu default config from their livecd.
upon compilation build was successful i reboot system and as you can guess smile, this time i was able to pass those lines above, only my gdm cant strart, but that is normal and i solved this with compiling nvidia drivers..

now, i tok ubuntu default config and compare it with arch config..there was many differences in all section and subsection but i was only give attention on PCI section, because everithing is telling me that. Right now i was certain that is something with arch default config, but i didnt have a time to investigate a bit more.

i also trayed with PKGBUILD from abs for kernel26-lts and ck and this time system freeze on power management event. System was responding to all request only my lcd doesnt show me nothing except those lines below, so one more prof for pci falling

pci 0000:00:1c.5: PME# supported from D0 D3hot D3cold
pci 0000:00:1c.5: PME# disabled

after a bit of research i trayed arch 2.6.36 kernel only with some boot param, in earlier posts some parameter was succesful like "noapm" but then my dual core becomes one core. So i was thinking what can couse this issue, i know that it was something with PCI, maybe GPU bios can't be directly accessed so i went to kernel site and red documentation. After digging through kernel documentation i found solution "pci=bios" which is forcing kernel to access pci bios with no direcly access and i was able to get X and uvesafb to work correctly for all the time. smile

also just to mention,
there must be something in default ubuntu config kernel file which allow me to pass described issues with ubuntu kernel, something in PCI section but for now i dont have time to for further research.

for now my Arch system work perfeclty with no boot freezing at all

regards

Re: [Solved]uvesafb and nvidia randomly crash

Thank you very much.
Maybe cause of problems with fl90 is that vbios is not in card but it is integrated with mainboard bios.
I've tried Ubuntu with newer kernel version ( 2.6.35 and 2.6.37) and there were also problems with detecting graphic card. It looks like the last working kernel version is 2.6.34.
