So, I'm in love with a new WM - my WMII zealotry has died down as of late. WMI was great, WMII is OK. It just seems to be getting far away from the usability I want.

I began looking at other minimal WMs... and nothing really struck me. Then I remembered ratpoison. I only used it once, and that was before I discovered the power of gnu screen. ratpoison is based on screen, fyi.

ratpoison supports window groups (workspaces) and frames (one full-screen covering)

right now, I'm still making my optimal config, but it's great to work with...

I'd highly suggest you try this out if you like a) screen and b) the keyboard

PS the best feature is the ability to run other WMs in a window group - so I can have 3 groups, and run metacity in group 2 if I felt like it... this is great with thinks like the crappy,crappy,crappy gimp.

I've tried lots of WMs over the years but never this one. Guess I'll give it a go one day this weekend... 8)

Since there's nothing to tweak, I'm not tempted to endlessly fidget with my windows and reconfigure my window manager, moving this window a bit to the left and that one to desktop two instead of four. I don't get bored with a theme and spend 45 minutes looking for a new one.

I'm gay for this stuff.... 8)

looks like its got good qualities esp for ppl that work and dont just redecorate the desktop all day

is completely new to me. Something I do remember from using ratpoison was that it just screamed "do something productive!", where as other window managers like fvwm (which I am using now) and even ion3 to an extent begged for me to tweak and fiddle with them. I really don't need all that functionality and eyecandy, and their mere existance is counterproductive for me. I'm not saying I got more done with ratpoison, just that I spent less time doing nothing. Perhaps I should check it out again. Thanks for the heads-up phrakture.

don't fell so, I wanted to post the same, but then you were faster.
I also recommend using ion3, if you just spend some time to configure it, you can do (allmost) everything you want with it.

iphitus I'm with you on ion3

I've only just begun to scratch the surface with ion3, but it's very impressive. If you want those transient windows To float…no problem. If you want that newly created window forced to a specific frame, done. Ion will also save you current session layout. There are also about a dozen status bar scripts that monitor various system resources…torsmo like stuff.

well, as far as ion goes... tried it and just didn't like it. ratpoison is also much more lightweight than ion (no lua and things like that)...

phrakture, ion is "extremely" lightweight and luas interpreter takes someting like 0.1mb memory,

i just wonder what's all the fuss is about ion3, i'm on ion2 here and is happy with that,
ion3 is not released yet, or is it?

ion3 is 'developmental', im running it now, i kinda like some of the new features like the scratchpad and wpanews is really really awesome for running the gimp.

btw. wpanews rocks, never thought about it.
for me one big advantage of ion3 is, that the scripting interface has been restyled and looks just nicer. but with all the stuff you can do with ion you have a hard time figuring out how to bind keys .

Yeah, to start with, i was going to murder that bloody lua interpreter, but hten one day, it all kinda made sense and somehow or other i understand it now.

go figure lol.

no I don't mean understanding the lua interface, I mean to decide which key should do what.
but I have a new problem, where should I include the statusd scripts from the website? they allways say that statusd is a nil value, but work anyways.
