mkdir slow on ext3 and mdadm

I've got a raid 5 array with 4x1.5TB sata disks assembled with mdadm. When the disk usage went past ~80% mkdir started acting up. There is a good thread over at ubuntu forums that explains the same issue well: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1225284

The issue seems to be solved with a change of the file system to XFS. I don't have the option to backup more then 1TB of data so that's not really a way that I'd like to go.

Converting to ext4 is a possible solution, but can it be done without significant risk of lost data? And will that even solve the problem?

Or is there a better solution?

Re: mkdir slow on ext3 and mdadm

I've converted to ext4, following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … ns_to_ext4, with good results. After the conversion I've been unable to reproduce the problem and I don't seem to have lost any data.

If I run in to any problems I'll update the thread but until then I'd like to think that this is a good and simple solution.
