[Printing SOLVED, scanning not] Pixma MG5220 wireless printer setup

I've been googling and searching the Arch forum for the last couple of hours and I can't seem to find a straightforward answer to this issue.

I have this printer connected to my router and looking to connect it to my desktop and laptop through the network.  I've got system-config-printer AND cups setup and have been attempting to connect via both.  If someone could give me a bit of a hand connecting this printer to my desktop, I can test whether or not the AUR package I modified to install the 5200 series driver from the canon site actually works.

thanks, but I have the software installed already... what I'm looking for is how to get it setup in CUPS or system-config-printer.

Re: [Printing SOLVED, scanning not] Pixma MG5220 wireless printer setup

ok, technically got this setup now...
after going to the CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631/) I clicked on the Administration tab and clicked the "Add Printer" button.  Originally, the printer was not in the list that came up... so I went through the menus on the printer itself (randomly looking around, so I couldn't tell you exactly where I found the info I needed) and found the IP address, which I went into my router's settings and added to the access list.  I made sure that I installed the modified PKGBUILD of the MG6100 that I worked on with the guy who made the AUR package (discussed at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112088 but not sure if an official PKGBUILD has been made yet). After that, I was able to see the printer in my list in the "Add Printer" page of the CUPS web interface.  It was at the bottom of the list: Canon-MG5200-series_XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX (Canon MG5200 series). I followed the typical prompts and was up and running pretty quickly.  I should still have my personal PKGBUILD somewhere around here, so if there is not a PKGBUILD for it yet, I would have no problem either posting on pastebin or adding it to the AUR.  Most of the credit HAS to go to Voire for all the help in figuring out what was needed for the specific 5200 series of this printer.  Unfortunately, Scanning via the network is still up in the air, so I had to plug it into my desktop via USB in order for scangear to actually respond to it and recognize it.

Sounds like scanning in usb mode is working then? I've just purchased one of these printers but haven't tried setting it up in arch yet.

yes, scanning and printing via USB work just fine... network printing seems fine as well... network scanning is a bit iffy atm though...  Once it becomes more consistant, I will label this officially solved...

Heck yes. I was hoping you'd put it up in AUR. I really have to learn to put together PKGBUILD's myself smile

Re: [Printing SOLVED, scanning not] Pixma MG5220 wireless printer setup

admittedly, mine is not from scratch... it is essentially an edit of the MG6100 PKG made by vioRe (pretty sure I spelled that right, he has spoken in the other MG5200 thread I started not too long ago...)  I was partially expecting him to beat me to it and upload it himself, but I guess not.. tongue it's been a few weeks and it's still not there, so I guess I will have to upload mine first chance I get... gotta look around and find it.

Can't find it at the moment. I'm guessing there is some sort of screening/approval necessary before it shows up?
Thank you CPUnltd!

I just did a search, and as of now, they are both in the list for me... I'd suggest checking back again first chance you get... big_smile

guess it depends on which ones you've got selected... cause I still see them just fine.  Well, keep me posted on when you install and let me know if they work for you...

Re: [Printing SOLVED, scanning not] Pixma MG5220 wireless printer setup

Greetings CPUnitd, finally found your PKGBUILD packages smile

I had been searchin AUR using Canon, Pixma, and/or 5220 and had found nothing. Did a search for 5200 this morning and low and behold, both printer and scanner appeared. Really surprised Canon didn't pull them up.

Both files have to be extracted into a Canon folder (ie. AUR>Canon>cnijfilter-mg5200 and AUR>Canon>scangearmp-mg5200) or the build will error out.

The printer package seems to have worked out fine. The scanner package is looking for gimp-2 and will error out if it's not present on your system but installs nicely once gimp is installed.

Thank you very much for putting these together.

Re: [Printing SOLVED, scanning not] Pixma MG5220 wireless printer setup

glad you found them... not sure why you have to manually install them, but I have not tried them myself via an AUR package manager like clyde, blinky or packer just yet.  I believe that gimp is in the deps, because it works as a plugin for gimp... don't recall if it was a dep or an opt dep atm... but I know I can either use scangearmp standalone or within GIMP... if you run into any other issues, do me a fav and post them in the comments section of the package.

Would like to use the comments there as much as possible so I can get used to referring there (I do the same whenever I have an issue with an AUR package someone else built)...  if it's not getting enough exposure there, then bringing it to the forum would be the next move. big_smile thanks for being my first test subject!  Feels good to have actually accomplished something around here tongue  I know I contribute in other ways, but it's nice to actually contribute with software and not just troubleshooting or suggestions. smile  Thanks again!

I always use cnijfilter for a general search or mg5200 for the specific printer...
