Help with Canon Pixma MP640

Hi all,

Okay let me run down the steps I've done so far and what I've learned. Apparently the newest version of cups does not work with Canon printers it seems, because of an issue with usblp.

First I got a version of Cups from the AUR with usblp enabled. The package is cups-usblp 1.4.3-2.

Next I followed a guide about Arch and the MP640 here.

The good news is that now my printer is recognized and it appears that all is well. However, when I try to print a test page (as Root) or try to print something from Kword I get the error:

"/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij failed"

The pstocannonij file exists and I have the correct ppd installed. I'm running Arch64 and I have all of the 32bit libraries installed. I have the cups and usblp daemons active in my rc.conf.

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance! smile

If you're still suffering with it, it may be libpng related: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=102291

Vamp898: that's not true.
Maybe not official, but I have my canon MP620 running with cups 1.4.4 and their proprietary (32 bit) drivers on arch64. Check my PKGBUILD on AUR if you want details on how I got it working: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=40474

Re: Help with Canon Pixma MP640

Yeah but that works only for single printers of the series and isnt the most beautiful way at all. The most Pixma MP Drivers dont work with CUPS 1.4

Re: Help with Canon Pixma MP640

I fully agree it's not very beautiful, but it serves my purpose.
I'm not sure about the other MP drivers. I did use the MP640 drivers first and they also worked on my MP620 (but because of problems with libpng I decided to recreate a PKGBUILD for the MP620)

Re: Help with Canon Pixma MP640

I've recently bought a Canon PIXMA MP640 multifunction device and it's working perfectly on my Vista 32-bit system. Now it's time to make it work on Arch 64-bit. Is it possible to make this device work without using any 32-bit libraries? I would like my system stay clean off any 32-bit software. Unfortunately on Canon website drivers for this model are still signed as TBD, although I've found this and this.

Re: Help with Canon Pixma MP640

The canon drivers are 32bit only. So if you want to use them, you'll need 32bit libraries.
The only option to use open source/64 bits drivers, then you need to play around with gutenprint. I got my printer working with it, but everything was stretched, so I never got it working properly.

You can also look into turboprint. It should work, but is not free.

Re: Help with Canon Pixma MP640

Unfortunately TurboPrint for Linux doesn't support Canon PIXMA MP640...

Are you sure?

EDIT:
Thought I would add that I currently use a Canon Pixma iP4300 and a Pixma MP620 on my system. Both run perfect with turboprint.
