Hey guys,
Today I tried to start my computer but I can't log in. During boot, it hangs for a while in the "Mounting filesystems" phase until it fails with a "Can't create /etc/mtab file" message. It also says "Maybe there is a stale lock".
How can I solve this? SLiM won't allow me to log in, it says it can't execute the log in command.
Thank you!

Can you do some repair as root? If not you can try using a liveCD to check if you have that stale lock.

I can't login as root.
I just used a live cd and I can't even mount the partition. It is giving me the "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on ...,missing codepage or helper program, or other error" error message.
I can't also do a fsck, it says the partition seems to have zero length!

Is there a /etc/mtab.lock or some other /etc/mtab* file?

Hey karol,
I was able to mount my / partition. However, some directories do not seem right. /dev only has 3 files, /media has the default files, etc etc. /usr is OK though. I'm not sure what is wrong.
Moreover, I tried fsck and e2fsck but I keep getting a bad superblock error.
Is there any way of reparing my filesystem? I'm not sure what went wrong, to be honest...
Thanks

fsck worked after all. All ok with the disk, but the problem persists.

vjoe, I am not at all clear what your problem really is. Can you elaborate ?

Blimey, I had to get home drunk to fix this!
I was being a wally and trying to find the files in /dev, when they were in /etc. There were three files - mtab~, mtab~1234 (some numbers) and mtab.fuselock, which I removed. And bam! Working fine now.
Cheers guys
