Laptop w 8600gt & external monitor VS nx1940w

Hello everyone, this is my first topic and I need your help.

I own a laptop which only has a vga-out port through which I try to connect it with a Viewsonic nx1940w. The laptop's video card is nvidia 8600M gt which I operate with the proprietary drivers from extra. The problem is that my screens EDID is not correctly readed and thus the maximum resolution I can apply is 1024x768 and not the native 1440x900.
I have tried multiple configurations in xorg.conf to bypass EDID and set my own resolution but I haven't really succeeded.
In Xorg.0.log I get:

[ 44481.518] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0
[ 44482.063] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode
[ 44482.063] (II) NVIDIA(0): "CRT-0:nvidia-auto-select+0+0@1280x800,DFP-0:nvidia-auto-select+0+0@1280x800"

I would appreciate any piece of help. Thank you all in advance.
