GDM won't let me choose KDE [ SOLVED ]

Hello everyone.

I installed KDE 4.6 two days ago to check out the new features.  I am running Gnome as my main DE, but when I get to GDM, it does not give me the option to choose between Gnome or KDE.  I was wondering how to activate or install this functionality, such as the way Ubuntu lets one choose an enviornment.  Or is there the possibility of using a Display Manager that is not GDM or KDM?

Just ask if you want anymore information.  Thanks!

Update:  The solution was to create the kde.desktop file in /usr/share/xsession/ .

I don't know, but I suggest that you change the subject to "GDM won't let me choose KDE" or something similar.

The current subject made me think that you were another new user asking which DE to use. Many users will avoid the thread because of that, and it will therefore take longer to get an answer.

You can use another display manager https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GDM

Also, please follow Xyne's advice and change your thread title (edit your first post)...

Re: GDM won't let me choose KDE [ SOLVED ]

What do you have in:  /usr/share/xsessions/

If there isn't a 'kde.desktop' file in there, you could try creating it and add this:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=KDE Session
Exec=startkde
Type=Application

I think thats where gdm gets the session list/menu items from. Also does a gnome session appear in kdm?

Re: GDM won't let me choose KDE [ SOLVED ]

A) Changed title as requested

B) I created the kde.desktop ( which was missing) in /usr/share/xsessions/  and am logging out now to test, then I will test KDM to see if GDM appears in that DM.

Creating the kde.desktop file worked! I can now choose Gnome or KDE from GDM.  Thanks for the help.

i think is a bug in kdebase-workspace. it installs the files in /etc/X11/sessions/ instead of /usr/share/xsessions

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Will be fixed in the next kdebase-workspace package.
