Udev Issues

Hi all,

First, a disclaimer: I believe that this subject does not necessarily fit in this subforum, and not even in the Arch Linux specific forum.  As such, I certainly won't mind if someone points me towards some other place where my question would more appropriately fit.

Here's the issue:

I own an HP Envy 14-1160se (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042E … ss_product).  One of the first things I tried was to boot from the Ubuntu Live CD.  This wouldn't work however, and would just go to a nonresponsive black screen right after the ISOLINUX messages.  So I gave up on Linux for a while, and recently tried to boot into Arch (which I have running in a VM).  Arch was a bit more verbose when starting up, so I could see that the nonresponsive black screen came up right after the step "Waiting for Udev uevents to be processed".  This leads me to believe that Udev is not able to detect some of my hardware, hence the black screen.

I've tried to Google this issue, and I can't find anything.  Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Udev Issues

Try passing the "nomodeset" parameter to the kernel line on the next boot and see if that works.

Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I'll try this tomorrow (I seem to have forgotten a blank CD and my system is all of a sudden reluctant to boot USB drives).

Re: Udev Issues

Cool, that worked.  Thanks a lot :-P.

Now a second question.  What changes now that this parameter is there?  As in, if I were to install Arch to my HD and put the parameter on the kernel line, would some things not work?

Edit:  None of the network interfaces work after setting nomodeset (which is to be expected I guess?), so now I would like to know how to enable the devices that lspci lists.

Edit 2: Ouput of lspci:
