I have the same ati card and just sometimes, not always, i have the issue of the black screen. Didn't really bothered looking around because knowing that i try very hard not to suspend the laptop and when it happens i just smack it and then hard reboot it xD

Last week i was install new pardus 2011 X86_64 and the suspend work`s all the time but there i use not fglrx but the other driver '"radeon". And i ask the developer who he fix this but he doesn`t tell me.

I`n not sure because i try in archlinux, ubuntu, sabayon with "radeon" driver but the same problem... blank screen. I think is not only from the driver but and some code should be installed.
