Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Tried a lot of distributions, but in the end I decided to go really conservative (and totally not KISS) with a base debian installation and openbox on top. So I have a really stable OS to work with every programme i need and Arch to play around 
But it was really nice to see a few new distros, especially Salix looks really interesting. Anyways, thanks again.

Yeah, I strongly suggest FreeBSD. Very Arch-like, yet has a stable branch for what you're trying to do.
