@Loth - To answer your question, I am maintaining an unofficial repo for the kernel26-ck family of packages hosting cpu-optimized packages as well as generic packages. For the x86_64 kernel26-ck-core2 family of packages, am I using CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS specific to the core2 family as well as core2 optimizations in the kernel's config. I wanted to confirm the values the i7s uses from the -march and -tune settings. They are published as "core2" on the gentoo wiki but I wanted to make sure that is indeed accurate.

KBuild uses its own set of flags -- KCPPFLAGS, KCFLAGS and KAFLAGS, for the preprocessor, compiler, and assembler respectively. Generally this is done because the folks building the kernel know better than you and they do their own micro-optimization which you generally don't want to be mangled by an overzealous optimizing compiler. It's only extremely recently that the option to build with -march=native appeared in the kernel config, -- its marked with an experimental flag and requires gcc 4.5ish (don't quote me on that version).
