I moved away from KDE4 towards a more simplistic approach, installing Slim / Compiz standalone. One among many things I miss from KDE4 is the ability to start a new X session leaving the current running, and then be able to switch between them with ctrl-alt-F7/F8. How can I implement this functionality manually? I dont need a graphical gui, a simple script suffices.

You can simply start another session with "startx -- :1". You can run this from your current X session, so you don't even need a script.

alt+f2 if you have gmrun installed or something similar and then type "startx -- :1" (without quotes)
it will start new X session on next screen nad you can switch between them by ctrl+alt+F7/F8

Thanks for the suggestion guys. However, what I'd like to achieve, is that I am presented with Slim on vc8, so another user can login.
BTW, compiz didnt really handle this command well, on vc7 it lost all decorations

I don't know how to do that with Slim. But if you are willing to use XDM, you can just put additional lines in
/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers
to get what you are trying to achieve.

I'm not sure if I like XDM, I guess we are spoiled with eye candy nowadays. I mean, imagine, starting with XDM, booting into Compiz with all of its bells and whistles, plus Cairo dock
