thunderbird mail fail

After recent upgrade, thunderbird mail fails with an error message....unable to locate mail.spool.file....

Unable to send e-mails nor receive.

Kde is installed version 4.4.5-1.  Thunderbird version 3.1.1-1.............

Running as root.

Pretty ancient stuff there... KDE is 4.6.0-1 and Thunderbird 3.1.7-3
