The Arch CD is great for rescuing my system when I break it. I use LVM and a lot of distros don't have those tools on the LiveCD.
However, if I bork my computer and simply need to get stuff done, I need graphics and Firefox, at least. Also being able to quickly/easily connect to WPA wireless networks is crucial.
Being fast would be great too, but it's more important to have the stuff I need.
Which distro would be best for me to have on hand? I was thinking Fedora because I know it has LVM stuff on the LiveCD. But there might be a lighter/faster option.

Roll your own with Larch Typing this from a Larch install on a flash drive. Looks almost identical to my laptop. I keep a chroot on my laptop updated and periodically update the larch install from that.

I use archiso to build a custom Arch system with the tools I use.
Pros:
- it's Arch, so I know the rescue system, even if I boot it three times a year.
- really easy to build: a package list, overlays to apply conf, and archiso does the job.
- I dd this on a usb drive, and I add a FAT32 partition, so that if I want to copy a file from the borked system I copy it on the FAT32 partition and insert the drive on another PC.

An excellent system in archlinux format for use as a regular or repair adjunct is CTKArchLive with the english boot option.

I keep a USB loaded with Slitaz on me at all times. It's really useful for fixing things and using as a temporary operating system. I used it a lot to get rid of friends viruses too.

Used to use Slax, based on Slackware. Don’t know how well it’s held up.

My favorite is probably Parted Magic. Thought it doesn't come with GCC.

The only reason i keep parted magic around is cause it includes unetbootin which neither grml or sysresccd have, both of which are fantastic.
I am also considering keeping a live medium with a full blown desktop environment around.
Possible candidates are mint and opensuse. Debian doesnt cut it due to the lack of binary wireless blobs.

I like system rescue CD, but it leaves a lot of space on a CD, so why not include clonezilla as well?
This is Clonezilla-SysRescCD LiveCD:
