[Solved] Black screen after boot - Ati 5870

Hello,

So i was running Ubuntu for a while, but then i had a load of errors, and when i booted at the point of the login screen i got a blank screen... So i assumed, that because of the previous errors, it must be the installation of Ubuntu, so i thought that this would be a good time to finally install Arch (Something i have wanted to do for ages)

*I checked my graphics card wasn't broken, by using my Ubuntu Live CD

After finally installing Arch, i booted up, and it gets all the way to "starting udev" (Something like that, it is hard to see), the bit right before the login prompt. Then i get a black screen, This is just like what had happened in Ubuntu.

After looking through the forums i found a few similar threads, but due to the ridiculous registration question. I have decided to make a new thread, as i can't be bothered to go and find the old threads (They didn't help anyway).

So any suggestions?

Thanks a lot

And i hope this has been a good first post, i intend to make many more in the future!

Re: [Solved] Black screen after boot - Ati 5870

Did your screen resolution adapt to the native one in the boot process?
If not, maybe there is somethring wrong with modesetting (KMS) while loading the radeon module.
To disable KMS, You can try to add "radeon.modeset=0" to the grub boot line (also see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ra … oting_KMS)
If you then reach the prompt, upgrade the system (when installed from the core image) and report back if it works.

Did you add  nomodeset  to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst and fglrx to the modules array in /etc/rc.conf.
Also you might have to configure xorg with the command:  sudo aticonfig --inital

you can edit the grub "on the fly" and add what you want.

wall of text

If you want to use the free driver, then read this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … modules.22
(yes, I know it is the intel page, but the problem is not spesific to intel, it can happen with all drivers using kms)

If you want to use catalyst, then do this:
1. boot
2. move the cursor to the grub entry you want to boot
3. e, down, e, space, nomodeset, enter, b
4. add nomodeset to the end of the kernel line in menu.lst
5. read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst  and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084

Sidenote: laptop or desktop? and vga or dvi cable in case of the later?

Wooo fixed! Thank you so much!

I am all ready in love with the Arch way, especially the forums!

Now to install a WM!

Oh and it is a custom build PC with Radeon HD 5870 ;]
