Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hello,

First of all, I apologise if this topic has already come up on the forums, but i've checked and can't see anything specifically relating to the problem im having, and ive also checked the bugs section of Archwiki and can't seem to see anything on there either. I'm not sure what information you guys need so ill just post as much as I can think of in this thread and then if you need any other info, ill post it on request.

The problem im having relates to a recent system update, which I did sometime within the past 4 weeks or so, after not upgrading for quite a while due to lack of free time.

In the last update I remember seeing it upgrading the kernel from 2.6.35 to 2.6.36, and since then I have been getting completly random kernel panics, whereby everything freezes. If I have audio output, the sound crashes and everything freezes, and the caps lock and scroll lock lights just flash in sync on the keyboard.

I have never had any problems like this in all the 7 months that i've been using Arch as a permenant OS.

Hardware:
Mobo: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA
Ram: 2GB (2x 1GB different brand sticks, same specs)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz
GFX: Nvidia 8800GT 512MB

Plug and Play hardware that is normally always connected:
1. Zoom Wireless Dongle (4410b chipset, using ndiswrapper and the Zoom windows driver)
2. Digital TV Stick (Artec T1) with specific firmware and using MeTV as a viewer.

I've looked in all of the logs, including: dmesg, everything.log, daemon.log, errors.log, messages.log and all the other logs. But there is very little information relating to the crash in there. I'm guessing this is because its a kernel panic so it doesn't have chance to dump anything into the logs before it all crashes? If needs be I can post whichever logs you think will be most useful, but i'm using my laptop at the minute so I wont get chance to post them until tomorrow evening.

I've also tried enabling the testing repos and upgraded to kernel 2.6.37-1 to see if this suspected bug is fixed, but the panic seems to happen the same, if not more with kernel 2.6.37-1. At the minute I've rolled my system back to kernel 2.6.36 because it seemed a little more stable.

It doesn't just crash when your in the X server either. Theres been a few times when i've had a kernel panic during boot. Sometimes a couple of seconds after it starts to boot into Arch. And sometimes just as its processing the Udev events. But as I say it seems completely random rather than relating to specific events.

During one of the crashes at boot I got an error message on the screen which read:

Setting Latency Timer to 64
HDA Intel 0000:80:01.0: PCI: disallowing DAC for device
[<c131621b>] ? error_code+0x67/0x6c

Thats as much as I can think of at the minute. As I say, if you need any more information or need me to paste my log files then let me know and i will do that tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for the help, its much appreciated.

Scott.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Are you sure it's a kernel panic ????  (kernel panic is not the same as freeze/crash !)

Is it a i686 or a x86_64 ???

When was that update ?  Please post your pacman.log

Have you checked the following thread ?

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hi Daniel,

I'm just guessing that its a kenel panic, as when it happens both the caps lock and scroll lock lights flash in sync, which is a sign of kernel panic isn't it?

My cpu is i686.

I've just read that post and i've downgraded udev to 164-3 to see if this solves the problem as some people have said in that post, although others later on in the thread say that this doesn't solve it for them. This morning it took me 4 restarts just to get arch to boot without the panic. I took a picture of the screen during the panic which ill post after work this evening, it looks pretty similar to the picture posted by "rabid_works" in the thread you pasted. I'm not sure about your post in the other threat that relates to the errors in the Oops report, could you clarify this so I can see if the problems reported in that thread are what I am experiencing?.

In the meantime, here is my pacman.log from 26.12.10 when I did the upgrade and the problems started. (note I have done upgrades following 26.12.10 to see if anything fixed the problem but with no luck, that is why the log is so long and I don't have any hosting anymore, so i've had to post it in quotes, I apologise).

I'm also going to run some hardware tests after work just to double check that all my hardware is functioning as it should so that will eliminate another potential cause.

If downgrading Udev to 164-3 doesn't solve the problem, i will try your version of it Daniel. And if that fails ill try downgrading the kernel to 2.6.35 or something and see if that solves it.

Sorry for the super long post,

Thanks again for your help.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue, I thought it started after upgrading to 2.6.37. The machine completely freezes, with the sound making a loop and nothing is responsive (mouse and keyboard). Unfortunately my keyboard has no lights, and I cannot see if that is a kernel panic. /var/log/messages.log does not record anything special. Furthermore, this occurs particularly when watching a flash video (youtube etc) in Firefox, or when switching from fullscreen to windowed with mplayer. I am wondering if that is actually related to the nvidia proprietary drivers.
My system is a x86_64. Scott, would you like to try downgrade the nvidia drivers?

EDIT: I have found this post on nvnews forums: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=158172 Looks exactly like our problem.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

If this is related to nvidia drivers, someone posted a workaround here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=155342
That could be the PowerMizer adaptive switch. If I recall correctly I switched to adaptive some weeks ago, but need to confirm at home. Tonight I'll try to maximize PowerMizer with nvidia-settings and will report again.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

OK, I have downgraded several packages and restored stability:
package           old version        new version
kernel26           2.6.36.3-1   -> 2.6.37-1
kernel26-headers   2.6.36.3-1   -> 2.6.37-1
nvidia             260.19.21-2  -> 260.19.29-2
nvidia-utils         260.19.21-1  -> 260.19.29-1

Using the new version, I had these random crashes (complete freeze, sound loop), especially when watching a video or youtube.
Using the old versions, I have a stable system, so far.

udev is 164-3, and not latest 165-1, but system was unstable with both, so I think the problem is different from the other kernel panic thread, which mostly occurs at boot time.

Therefore it is one of the packages above. I will start to upgrade one by one and see if I can trigger the instability again. It could also be a combination kernel/nvidia version.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Upgrading nvidia to 260.19.29-1, keeping kernel26 2.6.36.3-1 results in a stable system, so far. So it seems that it is 2.6.37-1 which leads to the crashes, in conjunction or not with nvidia 260.19.29. Unfortunately, it is not possible to install 2.6.37 kernel with the old nvidia 260.19.21 using the compiled packages.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Right an update. I was just in the process of writing a reply here, saying that the kernel panic was fixed... when guess what happened. I had a kernel panic again! D@MN IT!.

Right, I do have a bit more information to go on now though.

I rolled back to Udev 164-3 and I still get the panic, so it appears that the solution in the thread that Daniel_F linked to doesn't solve the panic for me. However, in the period of about 2 hours not having any panic... I had a normal crash, no kernel panic. And with this crash I got some info in the logs.

Here is my "everything.log" at the time of the 'normal' crash:

This appears to all be related to my wireless card and nidswrapper. After talking with my brother who is a bit more knowledgeble about Arch than me, he said that the line "Jan 11 00:22:08 localhost kernel: Pid: 4698, comm: kworker/u:0 Tainted: P            2.6.36-ARCH #1" relates to the removal of the wireless card. Is this correct?. If so this is strange because I haven't removed the wireless card.

I ought to say at this point that i've had problems with my wireless card and Arch from day one. Problems relating to the wireless just going off randomly and you either have to reload the ndiswrapper module or physically remove the card for a few seconds to get it to work again. However, i've never had any crashes caused by it up until now.

It's also in the back of my mind that this could still be a Udev problem as its relating to plug and play hardware, and if im right in thinking, Udev is what processes events like plug and play devices?

I don't want to get bogged down in thinking its the wireless and disregarding anything else, so if anyone has any more suggestions feel free.

I also had chance to test my hardware earlier. I tested using software from the Hirens Boot Disk. Specifically: PC-Check and all tests passed. I also checked my ram using memtest86+ and that passed fine. So for now i'm disregarding any main hardware failures.

Hi Zebulon,

I enabled the testing repos yesterday and updated to the testing kernel and along with this I also had to update nvidia and ndiswrapper. This gave me the same if not more instability.

I rolled back everything that id updated from testing and now im using:

Kernel26 2.6.36.2-1
Linux-api-headers 2.6.36.2-1
Nvidia 260.19.29-1
Ndiswrapper 1.56-6.

Tomorrow im going to leave my pc running while im at work, but im going to disable all unnecessary daemons, disable the ndiswrapper module and close all unnecessary programs, so that there is just the base system and X server running to see if the crash / kernel panic still occur.

If this still happens, ill then leave it running without an Xserver running and see if the same happens, this way I might be able to rule out a couple of possible causes.

In the meantime, has anyone got any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help,
Scott.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

No, the recent udev related panics have to do with ata hardware. This is not your case. Yours is definitely an ndiswrapper thing.

What wireless card are you using ??  Do you really need ndiswrapper ?? Are there no native drivers available ??

More: I spotted USBCORE there too.  Is it a USB connected card ??  Could it be a faulty USB port or an intermittent cable/contact failure...

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hi Daniel,

Im using a Zoom Wireless G Card, which uses the 4410b firmware with the windows drivers.

At the time of installation and as far as I am still aware, there is no alternatives to Ndiswrapper for this card and no native drivers, as it is not a mainstream wireless card or chipset. I might be wrong in thinking this though?

It is a USB card and it could potentially be a faulty USB port, however PC-Check tests all the ports during the motherboard tests. If what I said in the edited post above doesn't work tomorrow, swapping the card to a different usb port will be my next move.

Daniel, do you think that the kernel panic is related to the normal crash? or do you think these are 2 separate problems?

*EDIT* After just having a look at pacman.log I noticed that ndiswrapper was also updated during the system update that I did on boxing day. I may try rolling back ndiswrapper from 1.56-6 to 1.56-5. I'm not sure whether I would need to roll back the kernel to allow me to roll back ndiswrapper as well though? **EDIT**

Thanks again,
Scott.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

I seems your card is based on the Zydas 1211 chipset. The native driver for that chipset is the zd1211rw, however it does not recognize every card model. You could try it and see what happens.

you will need the firmware pack:

sudo pacman -S zd1211-firmware

Here is some information on the driver:   http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/zd1211rw

And here instructions on how to make it talk to your card:  http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … 11rw/AddID

Don't forget to disable ndiswrapper beforehand. Just put a "bang" in front of it in your rc.conf like this:

MODULES=(!ndiswrapper snd-intel8x0)

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

I don't know how you've managed to find that it based on that chipset. I looked for hours trying to find what it was based on.

Anyway, I downloaded the firmware pack and loaded the module with ndiswrapper unloaded, and it doesn't pick my card up. So I followed the instructions in the link you pasted Daniel to modify the firmware based on different chips, and for some reason I can't get access to

/sys/bus/usb/drivers/zd1211rw/new_id

. Each time it just says Permission Denied. Ive tried using sudo and logged in properly as root and I get the same each time. Am I doing something stupidly wrong or is there a reason it keeps saying permission denied?

I also had my pc running all day with the ndiswrapper module unloaded and all unnecessary daemons stopped, and it didnt crash once in the 9 hours I was at work. I just need to try leaving the xserver running with ndiswrapper only to make 100% sure that its ndiswrapper causing the crash / panic.

Thanks,
Scott.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hello All,

I still haven't resolved this problem, and im starting to think that its unrelated to my wireless card after all, unless theres multiple problems. I've been through numerous system updates since the time of the last posting and the problem still persists. From my latest understanding, this could all be Udev related, but i'm not sure.

I still have all the same hardware as mentioned in my initial post, but I'll give you an update as to what versions of different things are installed at the present time:

Kernel: 2.6.37-5
Nvidia: 260.19.36-2
Ndiswrapper: 1.56-7

I have managed to capture a few of the Kernel Panic's during boot when it gives you the stack trace and ive pasted one below. But I haven't been able to get any useful info from any of the logs relating to the panic.

Stack Trace Screen Capture

From what I can see it seems to be something to do with the ATA libraries and Udev. I initially thought maybe my PSU wasn't supplying enough power, because my setup is getting pretty old now. I don't know if this would cause a kernel panic or not, but I disconnected the power to all the drives apart from my main 500gig drive anyway and the panic still occurrs. I have run various hardware tests from the Hirens Boot Disc including: HDD Regenerator to check for bad sectors, Hard drive mechanical failure test, PC Check to test the motherboard, Cycled through Memtest86+ 3 times with no errors, all just to make sure my hardware is ok, and all seems fine.

This panic is starting to really grind on my patience, it appears to be completely random, I could be browsing the internet, I could just have msn open, I could be playing CS:S through wine, I could be watching tv, and it even happens if you just leave the computer idle on the desktop with nothing running. Can anyone offer any help with this, I thought that maybe leaving it for a few kernel updates would fix the problem, but it doesn't appear to have done so.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks again,
Scott.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Interesting, Scott. I can report almost the same behavior since kernel upgrade to 2.6.37 (or some other pkgs that time). What is suspicious for me: I rune top and it showed me periodic kacpid and kworker activity despite of no explicit workaround related. There is a googled-out complaint on kworker consuming all system resources. More, some acpi issues could be the case. I am going to check it. Petr

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hi Pjezek... what do you mean by:

I rune top and it showed me periodic kacpid and kworker activity despite of no explicit workaround related.

What do you mean by "rune top" and  what is periodic kacpid about?

Can anyone help with this issue? this has been hanging open for months now and its really starting to get annoying.

Scott.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hi ScottWilson, "top" is a command to see current processes, their usage of cpu etc on command line. What i see from your screen capture, it is definetly a libata and udev problem. Here is the forum thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=111197
The patch have been submitted to all kernel26 packages. So may be it is a problem with your udev? Did you have udev-165-1 installed. If you have older udev installed please upgrade it and see if it works for you.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hi Tarakbumba,

Ah right I see, I didn't know about the "top" routine, sorry about that.

Anyway...
Last night I downgraded my Udev from 165-1 to what I think it was before the panic's began happening which was 164-3. I had to also downgrade upower as this depended on udev 165-1. I don't clear my pacman cache so I have numerous rollback options for things like Udev, which I could roll back so far as Udev 160-1.

So far (touch wood) I haven't had the  reported kernel panic, but having said that, I have been at work so the system hasn't been running for long periods of time.

Today however, I have had a different sort of crash which I don't think is a panic as non of the keyboard lights flash. I've looked at "everything.log" and the only thing that I can see happening sometime within maybe 1 to 3 minutes of the crash is this:

^^This one was during the reboot after the crash happened.^^

Anyone got any ideas? I might try connecting to the net via network cable and unplugging the usb wireless card and seeing if the crashes still occurr.

Thanks again,
Scott.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

As i can see, and you have noticed, your last crashes were caused by your network adapter(both ndiswrapper and usbcore). I think you should buy a more linux friendly wireless adapter.

Re: Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

Hehe Tarakbumba thanks for the advice, but buying a new adapter is a poor workaround in my opinion.

There is something that has been updated (whether that be ndiswrapper, udev, usbcore or something else) that is now causing the crashes that didn't used to happen with this same network adapter. I'm determined to find the cause of it even if its not rectifiable.

Anyone got any suggestions? Im running system on a network cable now with the Ndiswrapper module removed and so far so good. I'll see how it goes and report back.

Scott.
