Recommendations on USB install

I purchased recently an UMPC with touchscreen, virtual only keyboard (Archos 9), and i am willing to install in a USB stick a Linux distribution.

Three years ago i used Faun OS so I would like something similar.

1) I must be able to install and update at least the software I use the most, like browser and multimedia players etc.
2) I like to partition the usb stick so that the storage that is not used is free to accommodate any additional data.
3) Lightweight and ability to run from the RAM (1 GB available)
4) Optimized for netbooks

Any suggestions?

I suggest that you download CTKArchLive which is archlinux-based, provides for cp2ram, pacman,  english boot option (default french), can install addons and can use cd or flash install media.

It is available as i686 or x86_64 and is ~550MB install size download.

Thanks for the answers. I found out that using persistent storage is better if I want to use my stick on multiple machines rather than one only. My favorite distribution is still Arch but i like top class hardware detection with minimal amount of time required to configure each individual machine.
