3D accelerate i915 chipset

I'm getting about 450fps with glxgears at the moment and want to speed that up.. I'm using a pentium M on a thinkpad x41.  How can I make sure I'm using the 3d capabilities of my chipset?

BTW- I can't seem to find any xorg.conf file in /etc/X11. Does Arch use the hwd template or something?  Otherwise, where else could it be hiding?

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

If you have no xorg.conf that chances are you're not getting optimal performance. Use hwd to generate a xorg.conf, try it with that and see if you get better performance. Also reading the output of glxinfo will give you some insight smile

See glxinfo for hardware acceleration info.

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

I wasn't.. but I added myself. Unfortunately glxgears is still at 452fps.  I think I've got to change the driver from vesa to something else.. with maybe some other tweaks?

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

run glxinfo again and check that it says :
direct rendering: Yes
try restarting udev to create the device:
/etc/./start_udev
mount /dev/pts
mount /dev/shm

I'm not sure what to make of your command to restart udev.. it doesn't seem to work. Can you elaborate please?

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

To restart udev, as root do:

/etc/./start_udev
mount /dev/pts
mount /dev/shm

That's from the wiki (at bottom) : http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/UdevHowTo

Try running glxinfo as root.  Maybe it's a permission problem.

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

Yeah -- I see that in the wiki.  Still, I get an error when I type it:

[root@spycamera ~]# /etc/ ./start_udev
-bash: /etc/: is a directory

Is it possible that the i915 needs to be loaded?  I did a modprobe for it and got no error but it still won't start X if I set that as the driver.  Think I'll have to recompile my kernel?

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

try with:
/etc/start_udev
then the 2 mount commands.

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

ok, restarting udev that way worked, but what happens after running the two mount commands?  glxinfo still shows direct rendering as no.

BTW - here is my lsmod output. The i915 driver is loaded but setting it in xorg.conf in place of vesa gives me an error.

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

Well here is the error when I try to use the i915 driver (driver not found even though I can supposedly modprobe it and it then shows up in lsmod)

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

Try something like:

Section "Module"
       Load "freetype"
       Load "dri"
       Load "dbe"
       Load "glx"
       Load "extmod"
EndSection

I don't know if the order matters or not, probably not.

Maybe adding BusID "PCI:0:2:1" to the card section helps.

Re: 3D accelerate i915 chipset

Making those changes to modules section didn't help.. regarding the bus identifier, I don't have a card section -- did you mean changing the device in the screens section? If so, what's the proper syntax for that?

thanks..
