Out of the blue and with no updates or changes of any kind since I last successfully used pacman, I got the following when doing a "pacman -Syu".
: Synchronising package databases...
testing 0.0K testing 16.1K 509.8K/s 00:00:00
pacman: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libarchive.so.2: undefined symbol: ?<$$?????I deleted the leftover lockfile, ran "pacman -Syu" again and got a load of warnings that package x was newer than the version in core.
I use testing so there must have been a problem with the sync db. A "pacman -Syy" fixed that issue and all is now ok.
But what could have caused the original problem?
