I can't detect fans

Hi
I got laptop ASUS K50IJ. Fans are louder than on Ubuntu 10.04, and consequently lower temperatures than in Ubuntu.
So i want to control my fans but when i do

sudo sensors

i get this:

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +41.0°C (crit = +111.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +35.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +36.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

As you can see there are no fans.

I wanted to try pwmconfig too but i get this:

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

What am i missing here?

Thx for answers

Re: I can't detect fans

Could be that you're missing a kernel module.  Have you run sensors-detect and what was the output?  If you did, perhaps you need the "acpi_enforce_resources=lax
" kernel parameter in grub/grub2.  See, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lm_sensors for more.

Re: I can't detect fans

I have dual boot with Ubuntu and i am using GRUB2 through Ubuntu. When i checked grub.cfg of Ubuntu i found out that under Arch menuentry there is already this syntax  acpi_enforce_resources=lax by default.

Is maybe a problem with GRUB2? Or simply with may hardware?

Re: I can't detect fans

I add to kernel line acpi_enforce_resources=lax, but when I start sensors, everything is same:

[punky@laptop ~]$ sudo sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +48.5°C (crit = +127.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +49.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +49.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

What now?

Re: I can't detect fans

This is sensors-detect:

[root@laptop punky]# sensors-detect
# sensors-detect revision 5861 (2010-09-21 17:21:05 +0200)
# System: Dell Inc. Vostro A860
# Board: Dell Inc. 0Y487G

This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need
to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. It is generally safe
and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions,
unless you know what you're doing.

Some south bridges, CPUs or memory controllers contain embedded sensors.
Do you want to scan for them? This is totally safe. (YES/no): YES
Silicon Integrated Systems SIS5595... No
VIA VT82C686 Integrated Sensors... No
VIA VT8231 Integrated Sensors... No
AMD K8 thermal sensors... No
AMD Family 10h thermal sensors... No
AMD Family 11h thermal sensors... No
Intel Core family thermal sensor... Success!
    (driver `coretemp')
Intel Atom thermal sensor... No
Intel AMB FB-DIMM thermal sensor... No
VIA C7 thermal sensor... No
VIA Nano thermal sensor... No

Some Super I/O chips contain embedded sensors. We have to write to
standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe.
Do you want to scan for Super I/O sensors? (YES/no): YES
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x2e/0x2f
Trying family `National Semiconductor'... No
Trying family `SMSC'... No
Trying family `VIA/Winbond/Nuvoton/Fintek'... No
Trying family `ITE'... No
Probing for Super-I/O at 0x4e/0x4f
Trying family `National Semiconductor'... Yes
Found unknown chip with ID 0x8502

Some systems (mainly servers) implement IPMI, a set of common interfaces
through which system health data may be retrieved, amongst other things.
We first try to get the information from SMBIOS. If we don't find it
there, we have to read from arbitrary I/O ports to probe for such
interfaces. This is normally safe. Do you want to scan for IPMI
interfaces? (YES/no): YES
Probing for `IPMI BMC KCS' at 0xca0... No
Probing for `IPMI BMC SMIC' at 0xca8... No

Some hardware monitoring chips are accessible through the ISA I/O ports.
We have to write to arbitrary I/O ports to probe them. This is usually
safe though. Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any
ISA slots! Do you want to scan the ISA I/O ports? (YES/no): YES
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM78' at 0x290... No
Probing for `National Semiconductor LM79' at 0x290... No
Probing for `Winbond W83781D' at 0x290... No
Probing for `Winbond W83782D' at 0x290... No

Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware
monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works
reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble
on some systems.
Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no): YES

Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done.
Just press ENTER to continue:

Driver `coretemp':
  * Chip `Intel Core family thermal sensor' (confidence: 9)

Do you want to overwrite /etc/conf.d/lm_sensors? (YES/no): YES
Copy prog/init/lm_sensors.init to /etc/rc.d/lm_sensors
for initialization at boot time.
You should now start the lm_sensors service to load the required
kernel modules.

Unloading i2c-dev... OK

,but sensors are same:

[root@laptop punky]# sensors

Re: I can't detect fans

acpi_enforce_resources=lax is a cheap work-aroud intended to keep the fans from switching on until the core temp climbs higher than usual.  There's a wiki thread on manual fan control but, of course, this won't work if sensors_detect doesn't see any fan sensors on the mobo.  @Shark: are the fans detected under Ubuntu?  I myself have never seen any indication that my mobo has a fan sensor, regardless of which distro I use, and I don't have BIOS control for them.

No, Ubuntu didn't detect them. I probably don't have any fan sensors.

If you check the list of supported devices http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices you can see if your particular chipset is supported.  It seems that *most* Dell's have little to no support.

Re: I can't detect fans

When I load i8k module, sistem freeze up,

Yep, that happened to me too last time I've tried that one out, but I thought it was just a temporary glitch (I think it was back in the 2.6.28 kernel version, and waaaay before that it actually worked).

Those kind of things are usually BIOS bugs (could be missing support in hwmon modules in kernel or in lm-sensors). I have my fans firing up on Dell Vostro 1310 when CPU temp is above 55-57C and shuts off when temp is below 51C - and that is fine by me, I never really needed to control them (I've tried i8k just to measure fan speed, I was curious).

Re: I can't detect fans

Don't know really, those guys from arch thread I left a few posts back didn't have a problem with i8k module causing kernel panic.

You could try playing with BITS:

http://biosbits.org/

It does require some RTFM magic and poking the options around smile But that could also (in some cases like overriding BIOS ACPI tables/settings) cause damage to your laptop so be carefull (even Intel guys posted a disclaimer about turning your laptop into expensive paper weight smile)
