Is gnome screensaver killing my processes?

I'm very green with Linux, so please bear with me.

My system:
HP Elitebook 8740w i7-840QM
500gb hybrid hdd
10gb ram
Arch 2.6.37

The screensaver kicks in after the configured amount of time, but after I unlock it with my password, all my applications are gone.  No trace of them in the process list either.  98% of the time this works fine.

I've had this happen twice.  The first time was after several suspend-resume cycles (which I try not to do anymore).  To clarify, the problem occured after resuming, using my laptop for a while, then leaving and trying to unlock the screensaver.  The second event was today just a hour or so on a cold boot.  When it happened today I had a VM running WXP installing a beastly software package for work.  I don't know how far it got, but there were traces of it in the VM after I re-launched it.

I've disabled gnome screensaver for now.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Brad
