Attaching firewire drive through PCIx freezes system

Hi,

I am having a problem using a PCIx based firewire 800 (1394b) controller on an Arch 64 system with kernel 2.6.37.  Whenever I attach a drive through the card my entire system freezes and becomes completely unresponsive.  I have to power down to reboot.  This doesn't happen if I attach the drive through the built firewire port on the motherboard.  This also doesn't happen when running from the Arch64 liveCD.  I had previously had Arch 32 and Gentoo builds on the same machine and the card worked fine maybe something got lost in the upgrade?  Or there is a problem with the newer firewire* modules?  I have tried changing the slot that the card is in and swapping in another brand new but identical card, neither changed anything.  Lspci reports both the PCIx card and the built in firewire are present:
