Installing on a VIA C3 (Samuel2 Core) reboots continually

Hi,

I am trying to install on a VIA C3 (Samuel2 Core), after hitting enter or typing "arch" or "arch-noscsi" the boot process starts but soon it reboots the computer.

This chip is considered a 686.

Anybody got any ideas?

Hm, it is considered but it is missing some commands AFAIK. There have
been a couple of posts on the forum about that VIA C3/i686 issue. No one
got it working from what I know. But there is new speed in the 586 port.
Maybe this can help you.

Re: Installing on a VIA C3 (Samuel2 Core) reboots continually

Hi Neri,

I searched the forums using "VIA" and "C3" but didn't find anything, can you give me a pointer to the discussion so I can follow it up.

Maybe it just needs a custom kernel?  All of the other optimisations should work.  I followed a similiar thread on an OpenBSD list when they had the same problem with this chip and I think that was the conclusion that they came to, although they wrapped it into their GENERIC kernel.

It would be interesting to follow up anyway.

Check my sig for more information on the i586 port. The current ISO has a few errors but I installed it on 2 boxes now and they work fine. The only downside for now is that not all packages have been ported yet, and they're on a single (slow) server.

Re: Installing on a VIA C3 (Samuel2 Core) reboots continually

The VIA C3 is considered an i686 according to Intel specs, but according to GNU people, the VIA C3 isn't i686.

When the GNU people made the compiler, they looked at what features every i686 CPU on the market had. When VIA introduced the C3, they only looked what Intel says should be supported. The official intel specs don't contain the extensions used by the GNU compiler, so i686 compiled packages built by GCC will never run on a C3.

It's just the same as assuming that every i686 CPU has an MMX unit, but after a while someone builds a fully compatible i686 CPU that doesn't have MMX.

C3 is missing the "cmov" instruction - conditional move... other than that it's compatible

there is different kind of c3 cpus I think, "Nehemiah" core and newer should work,

maybe this samuel2 core is an older one,

Via has released the C7 with a SMP compatible layout -"V4 bus". I wonder if this one would be really i686 cuz it would make a nice 24/7 machine.

Re: Installing on a VIA C3 (Samuel2 Core) reboots continually

I would be very surprised if it wasn't fully i686 ready,
I checked out the specs over at vias site and it says that it supports sse2 and sse3 but I couldn't find anything related to ix86 ratings,
