Italics highlighting in bash - less, more, man, etc.

Ok, this is driving me crazy and I can't seem to find anything in the man page(s) or online (wiki, bash help pages) to change the 'highlighting' in bash -- less, more, man, etc. My laptop is normal (foreground/background color reversed), but my server is set to highlight with italics for some unfathomable reason, making it almost impossible to see any terms you search for. This doesn't seem like it should be so hard!

Can someone please let me in on the secret and/or show me where to find the answer? I hope I explained that clearly enough.

Thanks!
Scott

edit: Is this something to do with the COLORFGBG environment variable when using SSH? Although adding 'export COLORFGBG="default;default;0"' to the server .bashrc doesn't seem to change anything hmm
