rt2870sta

SO I bought a CISCO AE1000 wireless usb adapter. I have tried for about a week to get it to work with Arch 2.6.37. Everything i read says that the module is built into arch and I saw that when I did a dmesg after having rmmod and modprobe rt2870sta. So anyways I have downloaded the latest version from AUR and done a makepkg -i and everything goes fine. My problem isn't that the device isn't being seen I.E when I do a lsusb it shows the device fine. When I go to do a iwconfig the interface isn't there. I'm assuming that this has something to do with the drivers but am not fluent enough to figure out what at this point. I have also blacklisted the other rt2x modules as recommended.  I'm not sure where to go from here to trouble shoot the interface. Also on an interesting note I can pass it through to a VirtualBox machine (running XP) and it works fine. I looked over the wireless setup wiki and still not sure where to go on this one. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: rt2870sta

Lets try this.  Unplug the USB device, then plug it back in.  Then post the output of dmesg | tail 20  and of tail -20 /var/log/messages  (The second command will require root privileges)

Re: rt2870sta

If you have a rt2870 device, you should first try the in-kernel driver (it works perfectly here).

This is from my rc.conf:
MODULES=(!rt2800lib !rt2800usb !rt2x00usb !rt2x00lib rt2870sta)

Only if it doesn't work or you need some bonus stuff use rt2870 from AUR.

Re: rt2870sta

I'll check out my rc.conf but pretty sure I already have that in there. I have tried also a pacman -S kernel26 which from my understanding should take me back to the original state of the built in kernel driver...Is that correct

Re: rt2870sta

Ewaller - First one says no file 20

Sorry, that should have been dmesg | tail -20
I am somewhat disheartened by the tail of message.log
I am, however,  still interested in the tail of dmesg.

Also, with the USB device plugged in, perhaps the output of lsusb -v with root privilege?

Re: rt2870sta

I think you need rt3572usb-wusb600nv2 from AUR http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=45997, but I am not certain.

This: http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2 is a link to a Ralink corp download page.  The RA3572USB driver there is the one you really want.

The hideous link in the PKGBUILD from the AUR link seems the same as the file on the Ralink site, but I did not check every character of that non-human readable URL.

I do not have this device, so I have not tried to build this.  YMMV.

Re: rt2870sta

Okay downloaded built installed. That didn't work either. I did notice there was a firmware updater and I ran that with probe and it said that the adapter was not found for that version

Re: rt2870sta

Okay I am at my breaking point so I am just going to reload my box from Scratch. I really haven't loaded to much on the machine and my VM's exist on a second hard drive. I am wondering however if the reason why I'm having troubles is because I am using the 64-bit. Instead of reloading this I am going to go with the x86 and see what happens. unless there is an easy way to convert from this Architecture to the other I think a reload is best and more clean

Re: rt2870sta

Okay A major victory in this issue. I was able to get the device to show up. However I am trying to now get it to let me configure it. It was the rt3572usb drivers that made the device work. Now if I can just get the WICD to work

Re: rt2870sta

Thats good news smile

As far as getting wireless working, I suggest you look at the tools:  iwconfig and iwlist scan
If you can see your access point (iwlist) you are well on your way.  If you associate with an AP (iwlist) you are almost there.  After you get these working, move on to wicd.

Re: rt2870sta

Okay I am posting this as a helpful hint to all of those who might have bought an AE1000 and are having troubles getting it working. First my environment is an Arch Linux i686 install with KDE and the kde-wicd-git for management. To make this work I did the following

1.First I did an lsusb to make sure that my device was being seen which it was.

2.Downloaded the 3572usb drivers from the www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2

3.Untar the download with zxvf and change into the directory

4.change to /os/linux and use your editor of choice to edit the config.mk file with the HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT and HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT and make sure they say y.

5.change to /common and use your favorite editor to add the following line under the #ifdev RT35xx
minus the quotes of course "USB_DEVICE(0x13B1,0x002F)}, /* AE1000 */

6. after that change back to the directory you had extracted the files to and type
make && sudo make install

At this point you have the driver however since the arch kernal has a built-in rt2870 driver it will interfere with the device being seen. so we need to blacklist it

7.edit your rc.conf and add add the following (Note you can ignore the vboxdrv and vboxnetflt as these are related to my VirtualBOx Install!
MODULES=(vboxdrv vboxnetflt !rt2870sta !rt2800lib !rt2800usb !rt2x00lib !rt2x00usb !rt2800pci !rt61pci !rt2x00pci)

8.Now that you have the basic's done it's time to see if the device is working. I reccomend running a rmmod rt2870sta just in case the module is loaded. After running this unplug and plug back in your AE1000 adapter. Run iwconfig and you should see an ra0 which is your wireless.

9.At this point the wiki for WICD is great for getting WICD running. One thing you have to realize is that arch installs a network management dameon by default and until you stop and disable this you won't be able to manage your adapter through WICD

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wicd

One Note that I also ran across was that WICD does not accept a passphrase as text and you need to run the wpa_ passphrase "SSID" "mykey" This will give you the hex equivalent that you can then put into WICD.

The only thing I still need to fix is that the blue light to show it's doing something isn't on but that isn't  big deal as I am obviously typing this up using my newly installed AE1000 adapter smile
