[solved] Slow unless root...

I've noticed that games (I've tried openarena, warzone etc) are running MUCH slower as an ordinary user compared to when run as root. For instance, openarena plays at full speed as root whereas when logged in as a normal user it takes more than ten seconds just to render the main menu.

Have I installed X wrongly? Is there some special setting that I have missed?

Is your account part of the game group (or is it games?)? Being not in this group might force the game to use software renderer, which is... well... slow.

You can only use 3D acceleration if you are in the 'video' group. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Users_and_Groups .

Thanks - they solved the problem. I had been searching extensively for wiki items relating to Xorg - didn't think to check users and groups.
