For several games I have tried to install and play (example: glhack, ToME, and S.C.O.U.R.G.E.), the graphics - no matter how I configured or tinkered - flickered randomly. I then tried running glxgears and had the same result. I'm running the latest catalyst drivers from repository on a Radeon HD 5770 in GNOME with compiz.
The oddity to me is that when I run 'sudo glxgears' the flickering is gone. I am a recent convert to arch, but I am assuming that some configuration file is either missing from /home, some configuration is wrong in home that isn't being read as root, or I don't have the correct permissions on a library.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

I did think of that (should have mentioned it) so I used gpasswd -a (myusername) video this morning to no avail. I did, however, just notice an error that pops up only when I run glxgears without root:
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
344 frames in 5.1 seconds = 67.883 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 969 requests (47 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Whereas sudo glxgears produces no terminal output. This makes it sound like I have a vsync issue, but I have no clue where.
cheers,
Zork

No, you don't have a vsync issue.
That's how vertical sync is supposed to be configured, unless you want graphics errors (tearing).

OK. I have double checked and i am part of both video and games.
However, when I execute the previous files via nautilus/ midnight commander they work fine.Any idea what config could lead to this?

OK, that was not it. However, the problem resolved itself when I reinstalled lxterminal and performed a system update.
Thanks for the help.
