Not exactly a newbie but i think someone will know how to fix this. Its probably something simple. I got Smplayer set up with vaapi:gl , everythings working fine except when a video is playing in the background and im browsing in chrome. Just using the scrollbar causes smplayer in the background to stutter. Ive tried a few things on the arch wiki catalyst page but nothing worked. Ive set mplayer/smplayer to a higher priority but nothing changed.
Is there to fix the stuttering....

Might be an ATI specific problem, those cards are notoriously bad on Linux compared to NVIDIA.
Maybe you should try switching your video output driver to xv.

Are you using Alsa? I was having stuttering problems with mplayer/smplayer when using alsa, changed to oss and had no problems since.

The wiki doesn't mention the "tear-free" option available in the catalyst control centre. Have you set that?

I tried xv and the stuttering is gone. But it aint as fast as vaapi. Hmm i might have to compromise. If the the catalyst driver was up to scratch....we can only hope. Changing to OSS had no effect...and yes i do have the tear-free option enabled.

I also have the same problem, but smplayer stutters each time I focus on another window/program.
I have an nvidia card, I tried to change priority, OSS, nothing change.
Any idea?

Try mplayer2. mplayer is better at smooth playback than smplayer, in my experience of nvidia and intel-netbook, and mplayer2 has multi-threaded ffmpeg.
Edit: mpv is what I use currently.
As usual, I would also recommend a BFS-patched kernel such as pf, and add to ~/.bashrc the following:
alias mplayer="ionice -c2 nice -n -4 /usr/bin/mplayer"
With this in /etc/security/limits.d/91-whatever.conf
# To be able to run nice and renice, to increase priority
yourusername - nice -4
