No headphone detection w/ ALSA + snd-hda-intel (ALC889)

I just installed Arch on my custom-built machine (formerly a hackintosh). I have a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3P motherboard with high definition Intel audio. Under Mac OS X, headphone detection worked as expected: when my headphones were plugged into the front jack, my external speakers (plugged into the green analog jack on the mobo) were muted.

Under Arch, my sound seems to be working fine, except audio continues to play through my external speakers even while my headphones are plugged in. I spent a few hours searching yesterday and found a few posts here and there about this issue, but no fixes. This post most closely describes the behavior I'm seeing, but there wasn't much of a conclusion, so I figured I'd see if there's been any progress in the last few months.

After I got my sound working, I fired up alsamixer. I can successfully control the master volume/mute. The only other control that seems to have any effect is the one labled "Front." Volume/muting affect both speaker and headphone output. Note that I am not able to control the volume of "Headphone," although I can mute it (but it has no effect).

I configured ALSA using the alsaconf utility, which generated the following in /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf:

# cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

I have tried adding an options line to force the model to some of the ones listed at http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation … Models.txt. This did seem to affect things, as some of the models disabled sound to my headphones entirely, but none of them disabled my speakers while my headphones were plugged in.

In addition to the information above and below, there is a setting in my BIOS to enable/disable Azalia. When I disable it, my Intel HDA hardware is not detected (only the ATI device appears in the lspci output below).

I'm an Arch noob, so bear with me (and let me know) if I left something out. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads/responds to this!

Re: No headphone detection w/ ALSA + snd-hda-intel (ALC889)

I have the exact same issue. Plugging the headset doesn't mute the speaker.

I've got an ALC889 (not 889a) from my MSI p55-gd85 board.  I've tried almost the things that you've done + the link you posted.

In my case, alsaconf can't even detect audio cards. I'm really puzzed to why.

I can't make it to work.  Have you managed to find a solution for this issue?

I'm actually an Arch noob too.

Thanks

Re: No headphone detection w/ ALSA + snd-hda-intel (ALC889)

Nope, I haven't heard of/found a solution yet, but there must be one. I installed FreeBSD and was able to get it working by adding a single line to a configuration file, but of course that's a very different platform with totally different drivers (I assume). I'll keep an eye out for a fix, but I'm not actively looking at the moment.

Thanks.  It would be great if you find and share a solution in the future.  I'll do the same.

Anything new? I've got the same problem and can't find a solution.
