blender running very slow

I installed blender from an extra repository and looks like it doens't work for me as it should. For example menus open slowly, I can take a coffee break during that time :D

I also tested blender on the same machine using other distros. There was a same issue In Debian, but in windows xp (in Virtualbox) blender worked well. <- This is no way I would like to use it :p

My question is:  What should I do if I wanna get blender working on Arch? My graphics card is radeon x1600 and I am using ATI open source driver. glxgears is working on 60fps and kernel mode settings is enabled. I haven't modified xorg.conf which I generated when installed X.
