Archstats observations

There are only 53 pkgs that are used by more than 50% of Archstat users!

I have 384 on my system (bit bloated)

312

But all the Python libs I install, I've bundled up as packages so they all count individually.

my config only includes what's relevant to my computer, no extra modules for hardware I dont have. heh, maybe running -ck might help too wink (hey phrakture tongue )

If it wasn't for the 5 billion packages KDE demands it'd be a whole lot less wink.

Oh, and just yesterday I compiled at least 5 kernels. smile

Go across to the help of the item (in menuconfig) and see what it's named, CONFIG_WHATEVER

Usually it's similar to the module name.

I find the best way to prune your kernel config, is to spend a good half an hour and go through the whole menuconfig menus, and disable just about everything that seems irrelevant to the hardware, most things are *really* easy, as you know what hardware you have. And i've got an intel chipset, so im not going to find via or amd based chipset ide controllers or other things like that either. So arm yourself with your dmesg output, lsmod, lspci and you should be ready to go. If you ever run into anything that you're unsure about, go to help see what it says, if it reccommends keeping it, keep it, if it doesnt say anything, ask on irc, someone's bound to know.
Over time you can whittle down the things htat you've been unsure about, and you'll get a good clean config.

again, come on irc sometime today or tommorow and ill be happy to help. just have an untarred kernel and menuconfig up

Yes and no, when i compile a kernel with Software Suspend I use modules for plenty of things, usb, everything I possibly can - if i can remove modules before a suspend, and reload htem after, it increases the chances of a successful suspend.

But generally, I compile most things in, except wireless, and sound.

So yes, i do use loadable module support.
