How to set default boot arguments

I remember seeing this the last time I built a kernel, but I left it alone, and seem to have misplaced where it is. If I want to set some default boot arguments to pass to the kernel (modifying menu.lst et al is not an option because it will be distributed to machine configurations I am unfamiliar with), how should I go about this? I intend to pass an option to a module built into the kernel.
