mdnsresponder vs howl?

What is the difference between mdnsresponder and howl? Is it correct to assume that mdnsresponder is a subset of howl, featurewise?

And which one should one use? E.g. do gnome use either one?

I'm using howl for the moment and that seems to work fine but it hasn´t been upgraded for a while.

Re: mdnsresponder vs howl?

Both do in fact the same. mdnsresponder comes with a dynamic module for glibc to do mdns lookups using the dns subsystem in glibc, while howl needs special API calls for this.
License between these two seems a bit different.

Most stupid difference between them: mdnsresponder gets used by KDE, howl by gnome. Why can't these two agree on one package hmm
