[SOLVED] Installing Arch on a 4K Sector Hard Drive

I decided to reinstall Arch on my laptop, which uses a 750GB Seagate hard drive with advanced format. I wiped my hard drive already, and installed core, but noticed that it doesn't align to the proper sector (I believe it should start at sector 64, if I'm not mistaken). Once I noticed this, I downloaded the latest gparted live cd, and tried to create the partitions with that, and it had the same problem. I even downloaded the latest Arch test ISO thinking that maybe an updated installer would align properly. Nope.

Basically, I'm taking my sweet time getting this installed, because I want it to be perfect. Once I have Arch installed again and everything the way I want it, I'm going to create an image of the hard drive and keep it ready in case I ever need to install again, so the minor details like this count for me.

Has anyone properly aligned the sectors during install? I read about advanced format on the wiki but I don't see step by step instructions on how to install Arch with the correct alignment, so any help would be appreciated.

The latest Gparted LiveCD should automatically align to sector 2048, which works just fine.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Arch on a 4K Sector Hard Drive

I just used the latest SystemRescueCD to partition and format the partitions. Then when I installed Arch, I just pointed it to the partitions for mount points.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Arch on a 4K Sector Hard Drive

Thanks all. You're right, the latest gparted does align the partitions correctly. I was looking at the erros when I run fdisk -l that made me think that it wasn't aligning them right, but it appears that it is correct. Thanks again smile
