The KDE community today announces the start of the Calligra Suite project, a continuation of the KOffice project. The new name reflects the wider value of the KOffice technology platform beyond just desktop office applications. With a new name for the Suite and new names for the productivity applications, the Calligra community welcomes a new stage in the development of free productivity and creativity applications for desktop and mobile devices.

Nice, I was wondering when "Group B" would release their office suite. It will be interesting to see where things go. IIRC, the only application in "Group A" is KWord led by Thomas Zander, but it's hard to say what the developer split will be like between each group. Hopefully the split in KOffice as well as OpenOffice will be good for open source office suites. I still think that Linux office suites could do with much improvement in speed, stability, features and UI. The KOffice UI is actually very nice, but it cannot match OOo yet in features or stability. I think the userbase is still very small, apart from maybe Krita.

Wow, I was sure this thread was going to be about a problem someone was having whereby all their KOffice apps were rendering with the calligra font. It seems like a strange name if they're not focusing on calligraphy somehow.

I think the true reason can be read at http://lists.kde.org/?l=koffice-devel&m … 415617&w=2

Perhaps that sheds some light on why they're abandoning the old name, but the new name isn't even mentioned there, so it doesn't shed much light on that!

I just installed Krita and noticed that there are icons missing from the gui. A quick visit to #krita on freenode revealed that Krita 2.2.2 is unmaintained (probably as a result of the above). 2.3 is out and 2.3.1 is being tagged tonight. I checked bugzilla, and didn't find any bugs related to the pulling down the new calligra versions. Is anyone working on that?

in fairness, that began with kde4. Dolphin, Okular, Dragonplayer, Plasma, Nepomuk. Not a K to be found there (and oKular was staring them right in the face. doh).
You can't very well rename them all, but for replacement programs, they seem to have largely abandoned Knaming apps.

Any news on wether Calligra will support saving as .docx? I thought I had read it somewhere, but can't find it anymore and would like to know.
Also, is there a release schedule available?

I wonder why they never called it "Kalligra"
The "BSD" things in life are "Free", and "Open", and so is "Arch"
