Need help fixing suround sound system for MythTv

I had mythtv set up to use surround71:CARD=SB,DEV=0 as my audio device and it worked perfectally until recently when I increased the value the audio buffer from 64kB to 128kB and after restarting ALSA I had no sound in Myth but other programs is able to use the sound device.  In the Myth debug log I see an error about how the "surround71;CARD=SB,DEV=0" device is busy, I am also able to confirm this running seaker-test

vendion ~ $ speaker-test -c 6 -Dsurround71:CARD=SB,DEV=0

speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Playback device is surround71:CARD=SB,DEV=0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy

When I rescan for audio devices in Myth it doesn't detect the card as being a surround71 but just stereo, but I do have a 5.1 surround sound system connected to my system.  I don't know why the surround71 would come back as busy when I have nothing outputing audio

Re: Need help fixing suround sound system for MythTv

It seems this issue is affecting more than Mythtv it affects KDE sound events as well (log in, log out, or when I dialog box appears), but things like Dragon Player, VLC, Amarok, and even the Phonon sound tests still work with no error.  I don't know if this helps but when I run aplay -l to get a list of playback devices I see that the Subdevices line for my ALC1200 Analog device shows 0/1 is this bad?

vendion ~ $ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC1200 Digital [ALC1200 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Re: Need help fixing suround sound system for MythTv

Anyway it may also help if I remembered to give the output of aplay -L as well

vendion ~ $ aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
default:CARD=SB
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Analog
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=SB,DEV=0
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=SB,DEV=0
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=SB,DEV=0
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=SB,DEV=0
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=SB,DEV=0
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=SB,DEV=0
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=SB,DEV=0
    HDA ATI SB, ALC1200 Digital
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=0
    HDA ATI HDMI, HDMI 0
    HDMI Audio Output

the surround71 is the exact setup that I currently have but I don't know what would cause it to report as being busy.

Device or resource busy

So see why:

fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*

Here is what I get from that:

vendion ~ $ fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*

/dev/snd/timer: vendion 4536 f.... knotify4
                     vendion 4711 f.... amarok

I haven't had any issues with any of these incorrectly taking control of my sound devices before

Re: Need help fixing suround sound system for MythTv

Weird I had to manually kill everything to get it to work, but these programs were never a problem with this before?  Is there a way I can configure ALSA/Phonon so that I don't have to kill kded4 (not sure what this even is), Kmix (would like to control audio volume out side of Myth), Knotify4 (useful...), and Amarok (not so bad I don't mind manually launching it when Myth-Music doesn't work)
